The Top 5 4k TV Gifts for Christmas
by Stephan Jukic – December 10, 2014
4K TVs are getting cheaper practically by the month and this is one hell of a great deal for anyone who finally wants to get their hands on one but without completely shattering the piggy bank to do it.
Now however, with the Christmas holiday season just under a month away, the already declining prices of 4K TVs of various sizes from various brands are taking some even steeper downward turns as manufacturers and retailers compete to grab customers’ attention with unique holiday deals.
Quite simply, the end result is that there has not yet been a better time than now to get your hands on a name brand ultra HD TV that delivers top-shelf technology while costing a genuinely reasonable price.
And to make the hunt easier for you, we’re going to cover five of the best 4K TV deals we could find from retailers both major and minor, brick & mortar and on the web.
With this handy guide, you can sift through a lot of the chaff and pick a solid 4K TV with the latest technology at an unbeatable price.
Also, before you go splurging on your next (or first) 4K Ultra HD TV set expecting to get the best in 4K entertainment, please review these crucial criteria that your TV and household should meet. The TVs below have been vetted to meet the TV criteria at least.
The first TV on our list is the Samsung 55-inch UN55HU7250 curved 4K TV. Currently available on Amazon for just $1,497.99, it’s selling at a massive discount from its previous price tag of $2,199.99 that was in effect just over a month ago.
Featuring the latest in Samsung 4K TV technology and the additional bonus of an “immersive” curved screen, the UN55HU7250 is a definite bargain when you consider that it’s coming from Samsung, a company not known for selling its ultra HD TVs at the lowest prices around.
Combine this with the superb technology that Samsung is known for and you’re getting one excellent mid-sized model for your home.
The 55HU7250 features full HEV functionality, 4 HMDI 2.0 ports, 3 USB ports, full Smart TV, a 120Hz refresh rate and comes with a smart remote control. With this baby, you can access all of the latest streaming content from Netflix, Amazon, Ultraflix or VoD 4K movies and entertainment from Samsung’s own 4K set-top box.
One downside is the edge-lit backlighting, superior to full array LED backlights, it nonetheless delivers excellent brilliance with a smaller screen like this.
Here we have one of Sony’s second generation of 4K TVs making a name for itself among consumers and technology watchers alike; The XBR65X850B is the successor to last year’s inferior and much more expensive 67X9005A.
With this latest model, Sony continues with its tradition of tossing out the popular design feature of ultra-skinny frames in ultra HD TVs and simply goes for a heavy duty, hard pounding bulk that’s mostly made up by massive edge mounted speakers that deliver some awesome sound. The speakers also happen to be matched in raw power and clarity by the ultra sharp, nearly flawless 4K screen that works with some of the latest in Sony visual technology to deliver one of the best visual experiences on the market today. Part of this technology includes Sony’s X-Tended Dynamic Range system for generating a much sharper than normal contrast, 4K X-Reality Pro processing power and a slightly modified version of Sony’s now well-known Triluminous color technology for extra richness in color display.
Other features include full HEVC connectivity, HDMI 2.0, USB 3.0 ports, a full Smart TV platform with apps installed for streaming Netflix and Amazon Prime UHD content and also compatibility with Sony’s proprietary Set-top 4K media player, which gives you access to what is probably the largest library of ultra HD movies, shows and other entertainment available anywhere today over VoD.
Overall, the Sony KXBR65X850B is nothing less than a top of the line classic among ultra HD TV models despite the fact that it costs more than some of the even newer deals you’re going to find on this list.
The two downsides to this model are its still rather steep price of $3,798 from sites like Amazon.com (though this is still a major discount from an earlier price of $2,498), and its edge-lit LED backlighting technology, which is getting a bit old for 4K TVs.
However, shipping is free and the XBR65X850B will definitely not disappoint in terms of quality or access to just about every kind of streaming 4K media you can hope to get.
LG is not generally known for making 4K ultra HD TVs that are on the lower end of the price scale. After all, this is the company that created the world’s first line of OLED ultra HD TV sets and retails them for some arguably stiff price tags.
However, with the 55UB9500, the company known for high-end 4K technology not only delivers top of the line quality but also does so at a very nice price of just $1,799 at current Amazon.com retail pricing. This is a 45% savings from the former price of this very nice mid-sized UHD TV set.
The LG 55UB9500 is one very slender, leanly designed set that nicely fits its ultra HD technology. It also features one of the most user-friendly operating systems yet designed by LG or practically anyone else thanks to the internal webOS-based user interface.
What you get with the 55UB9500 is a native 120 Hz refresh rate that can be augmented to 240Hz with built-in IPS panel technology and edge-lit LED backlighting. The webOS-based interface comes with a Magic Remote and full access to some of the latest 4K entertainment apps such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. Full HEVC compatibility is of course part of the picture here along with WiFi connectivity and access to 4 HDMI ports, 3 USB ports and the usual component, composite, Digital Audio and LAN connection features.
A couple of defects to this model include an internal lag time that might make the 55UB9500 less than ideal for 4K gaming uses and an edge-lit LED backlighting that is by now old technology. However, this is still a wonderfully priced set from one of the most advanced brands on the market.
For our fourth set on this deal list we come back to Samsung with a new model that’s truly sitting at what you could consider a rock bottom price for a 4K set from the company.
The Samsung UN55HU6840 was recently available from Wal-Mart at a truly discounted price of just $900 but this deal is almost certainly over by now. However, you can still pick up your own set online from prices that are currently as low as $1,199.99 (the current price at Amazon.com).
For a 55 inch 4K TV from none other than Samsung, this is a major deal and definitely worth looking into. The UN55HU6840 is a very recent arrival on the market, so hands-on reviews are still pretty scarce on the ground. However, it at least features some excellent specs from a company known for its top-shelf, fully connected 4K TVs.
The refresh rate is a bit low at 60Hz but despite this the viewing experience in full Ultra HD should be more than enough for most beginner 4K TV owners. The TV features 4 HDMI ports, a dedicated Gaming mode, full Smart TV features and of course comes with built-in WiFi and a LAN connection.
The UN55HU6840 also offers access to online streaming content from Netflix and others thanks to its HEVC compatibility and includes an apparently very decent upscaling engine for viewing conventional Full HD content at a level of clarity that approaches 4K quality in many respects.
Furthermore, the UN55HU6840 comes with Samsung Mirroring technology, which allows you to send content wirelessly straight from your mobile devices right into the TV for easy, quick viewing. The edge-lit backlighting technology of the UN55HU6840 is pretty standard for a lower-end model like this but it should provide the typical sharpness and clarity that can be expected of edge-lit LED backlighting in Samsung 4K sets.
Oddly, the manufacturer has been a bit silent about one of their latest and most affordable UHD sets and as of this writing, information on the UN55HU6840 is still a bit scarcer then we would like.
This listing simply wouldn’t be complete without one of Vizio’s pioneering 4K sets. While they have received some minor complaints about their video display quality, the firmware updates that will address these minor bugs are definitely on the way. That minor detail aside, the Vizio P-Series TVs are some of the best 4K ultra HD TV deals to be found on the market today, and they have been this way since well before the ramp-up to Christmas, in face, they’ve been a great deal since the day they went on sale at the beginning of October.
This is what makes Vizio’s line of 4K TVs so “pioneering”. They offer the full spectrum of the latest technologies of optimal 4K entertainment and in an excellent range of screen sizes but do so at prices that were until very recently considered nearly unthinkable.
No other major brand can let you get your hands on a 70-inch 4K set like the one we’re discussing here for the ridiculously low price of just $2,499.
The 70” inch P702ui-B3 offers the full range of the latest technologies, including full connectivity options, complete HEVC compatibility, access to Netflix 4K, Amazon Prime 4K and also Ultraflix and its 4K VoD service.
Furthermore, with the entire Vizio P-Series line, you get full array LED backlighting, which is vastly superior to the edge-lit LED arrays found on almost any other name-brand 4K TV found on this list.
Other crucial features include a very well-reviewed upscaling engine for viewing HD content in sharper clarity, built-in WiFi and a total of 5 HDMI inputs for maximal connectivity with other 4K friendly devices.
Overall, at $2,499, the P702ui-B3 70 inch 4K TV from Vizio is probably one of the best holiday deals around right now.
