IMAX Announce 4K 3D Digital Camera
By Matt – June 17, 2014
As of yet 3D films haven’t really taken off. Sure, the 3D showcase Avatar was a blockbuster. However, 3D effects in movies still remain a little limited. Some might even tell you that for much of the time a 3D film seems almost the same as their 2D alternatives. IMAX’s announcement of the first 4K 3D digital camera could, therefore, give 3D films a considerable boost.
IMAX have developed a 65 mm 4K digital large-format 3D digital camera that will showcase films in high-resolution 3D. This is a digital camera that delivers stunning image quality, and is less than half the size of alternative digital 3D cameras. The new digital camera is also a genuine 4K stereo camera. Hugh Murray, the IMAX SVP of film production, said of the camera:
“The goal with The IMAX Experience has always been to transport movie goers into places they’ve only dreamed of. With the lightweight and compact IMAX 3D Digital Camera, we are providing today’s leading film makers with the ability to take high-resolution 3D cameras into places they’ve never been able to before.”
In IMAX theaters sequences captured with this camera will be expanded to fill up more of the IMAX screen for greater crispness, color and 3D. Sequences filmed with this camera will be presented in a 1.9:1 aspect ratio. Consequently, IMAX theaters are expected to offer 26% more of the image than more standard cinemas.
The IMAX 3D Digital Camera featurette video gives us a first look at the camera. The video above shows some behind the scenes footage of the camera.
The camera is revolutionizing 3D capture in films. Now action scenes that would not have been possible with larger cameras can be filmed with the new digital 4K 3D camera. The camera is more flexible than larger, cumbersome alternatives that limit the director’s camera movements. The IMAX 3D Digital Camera is making its big-screen début in Transformers: Age of Extinction, and the film’s production team captured chase scenes and helicopter shots in high resolution 3D. IMAX’s Vice President Greg Foster stated:
“We’re blown away by what Michael Bay has been able to do with our new digital 3D cameras. With Transformers: Age of Extinction, he takes IMAX® 3D to the next level – putting movie goers smack in the middle of the action with the Autobots and Mark Wahlberg as audiences have never seen before.”
Transformers: Age of Extinction will be the fourth installment to the film series. It is a sequel to Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which takes place four years after the invasion of Chicago. It is going to have an entirely new cast, and will also be the first to include Dinobots that transform into robotic dinosaurs. Transformers: Age of Extinction will open in cinemas on 27 June. Then you will be able to see the first film shot with the IMAX 3D Digital Camera. The camera could add an entirely new dimension to films with unmatched high-resolution 3D.
