Sony VPL-VW600ES Review: Native 4K SXRD Home Theater Projector
It isn’t cheap by any standards, but the Sony VPL-VW600ES is one hell of a fine 4K home theater projector. Featuring Sony’s SXRD 4K home theater technology, this projector gives you 4K Ultra HD power that puts 1080p HD in the dust as far as projector screen viewing goes. Features such as anamorphic 3D and upscaling capacity from HD to 4K let you watch a wide array of videos and content right inside your home within the context of a fully immersive, crystal clear experience.
What’s great about this projector? Plenty. As we’ve already mentioned, it gives you 4096 x 2160 pixels of ultra-high definition resolution 4K technology that you can apply to any conventional HD content you want to watch with the 600ES. The picture clarity and theater level experience it offers is simply mind blowing in its clarity and quality. You will absolutely impress your friends with this gadget and enjoy movies or sportscasts like you never have before.
Furthermore, the flexible and easy adjust projection process for this powerful machine makes it much more versatile than many competing products, letting you use it in a wider variety of rooms.
Additionally, the Sony 600ES features an interesting 2d to 3D upconversion algorithm that lets you convert almost any sort of 2D content into an immersive 3D viewing experience that can even be enjoyed at 4K clarity levels.
There isn’t really much that can be called bad about this total powerhouse of a projector. It really does an excellent job of fulfilling all of its specs and living up to its hype incredibly. However, 4K content is still scare on the market and at $15,000 dollars this is not at all a budget home entertainment purchase.
If you want a total powerhouse of a 4K home theater projector badly enough to spend the money on one, then this is definitely the model you’ll want to get your hands on.

Most of the highlights that need to be mentioned about the VW600ES are visual in nature and we’ll cover them in some detail shortly. However, there are a few things worth mentioning here. Possibly the biggest highlight of this excellent projector is its upscaling algorithm which goes by the name of Reality Creation. With this technology, you can upgrade the visual power of your Blu-ray HD videos, DVDs and regular HD content to full 4K clarity that genuinely stands out for its functionality. Best of all, Reality Creation also offers an A/B demo format that lets you see both the original image quality and its upscaled counterpart simultaneously for the sake of easy comparison.
Also worth noting is the 2D to 3D upconversion engine that lets conventional HD 2D content become 3D with the use of your 3D glasses, at least according to Sony.
Finally, the lens related features of the 600ES are top notch. It offers lens functionality for working with either normal 16:9 screen ratios and 2.35:1 widescreen formats. Furthermore, the lenses are fully motorized, can have settings programmed into the projector’s memory and offer numerous placement and adjustment options.
Zoom functions on the 600ES are also nothing to complain about. They offer fully automatic, powered zoom, focus and lens shift (both in a vertical and horizontal direction). On top of this, the zoom lens ratio is a useful 2.06:1. What these essentially mean is that you can use a far larger than usual variety of locations to cast your VW600ES projection.
Finally, the 600ES’s Motionflow technology allows for a “Motion Enhancer” function that will add frames to fast action video content and reduce its blur significantly enough to create a genuinely noticeable difference in how you see fast, complex movement on your screen.
The Sony VW600ES offers some of the best visual specs on the 4K projector market today. Its 4096x2160 pixels of Ultra HD definition, 1,700 ANSI lumens of brightness and 200,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio all work together to create extraordinarily crystal clear visuals in both native 4k content and upscaled HD video regardless if you’re watching your projector screen at a minimum size of 60 inches or its full 300 inch expansion. With this projector, you really don’t need to be watching native 4K content in order to really enjoy full UHD crystal clarity.
Other powerfully designed visual specs on the 600ES include Triluminous Display technology and its advanced SXRD panel system. The Triluminous display system creates a much broader than average range of colors for the sake of filling your video content with a maximum of texture, shade and tone. This Triluminous display is incorporated into the SXRD digital drive panels of the 600ES and the 4K SXRD panels themselves work to minimize the amount of space between each pixel to a degree that creates a genuinely exceptional response rate of 2.5 milliseconds. With this 2.5 millisecond response rate, you can enjoy even the most rapid fire action sequences in complete smoothness and clarity.
Finally, visual control capacities that this projector gives you let you manually adjust the hue, brightness and saturation of your projection colors to your favorite personal preferences. You can also use the 600ES’s picture position memory feature to memorize and later recall the lens position as it was for any given movie, thus preserving each film’s ideal aspect ratio for later viewing.
The VPL-VW600ES is designed to be fully compatible with several video formats. These include: NTSC, SECAM, PAL, SDTV (480i) and EDTV (480p). Also, it gives you a top of the line 4K compliant HDMI 2.0 connection that will enable content viewing at a hefty 60 frames per second. Furthermore, you can later perform easy firmware updates to your VW600ES thanks to a built-in USB port.
This is probably the biggest sticking point with the Sony VPL-VW600ES, it is not by any means cheap at just under $15,000 dollars. However, it is cheaper than almost any other true 4K projector on the market right now and if 4K is what you’re looking for in your home projector, then the 600ES is the best deal you’re likely to find.
Again, there just isn’t much that’s worth complaining about with the 600ES. We just wish that this powerhouse of a 4K projector were cheaper than it is right now.
