While TV shipments fall 4% in 2015, 4K TV sales grew enormously and continue to do so

According to a recent study by research firm IHS. Total annual TV shipments for the year 2015 totaled out at 226 million units sold. This was a decrease of 4% from 2014 sales. Furthermore, the decline caused a market oversupply in the second half of the year and thus led to reduced prices for LCD HDTV panels. On the negative side, the general rate of inflation and random exchange fluctuations in key currencies for TV sales (most importantly the US dollar) meant that consumers in assorted markets didn’t really notice the price decrease as they might otherwise have done.

On the other hand, in the same year, 4K TV demand and sales continued to grow and by an astounding margin, with shipments expanding by a whopping 173% in the same year as HD TV sales dropped by 4%. This still totaled out to only 32 million TV sold for the year but the growth is nonetheless impressive given the general market conditions for TVs.

Another factor that partially aided the growth of 4K TV sales in particular was the simple fact that while HDTV prices dropped only negligibly, 4K TV retail costs per inch of TV screen size eroded by a hefty 30% from late 2014 to the end of 2015. This was a very notable decrease in pricing.

IHS also found that plasma and CRT sales dropped to negligible levels while Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) TV sales are still in the early stages of their growth, though their sales also rose for 2015. As for sales of LCD TVs overall (mainly HD models), sales dropped by 1% in 2015, after a 7% rise in shipments/sales in 2014.

Other findings by the research firm also show that the pace of TV screen size growth also slowed down in 205. with the average size of TV displays of HD resolutions expanding by just 2% to 39.3 inches, which is about half the rate of growth for 2014. On the other hand, again, for 4K TVs the results for screen size growth in 2015 were more impressive, with TVs in the 40 to 50 inch range seeing heavy sales growth with 4K ultra HD models. Specifically, 30% of all 55 inch or larger TVs (the most popular 4K TV size) were models with ultra HD resolution and another 30% of TVs in the 48 to 50 inch range were also 4K models.

For the fourth quarter of 2015, global TV shipments dropped by 2% year over year but with variations in sales figures in different markets: Thus, North American TV shipments actually grew by 2% while growth in TV sales in emerging markets dropped by 6% overall. Notable exceptions to this drop in emerging market growth were China, in which sales of TVs jumped by 12% and Mexico with more modest growth figures. However, overall sales in Latin America slipped downwards by 6% from their growth rate in 2014.

    the problem is all the 4k TV’s that have been sold are not HDR. Tv makers screwed everybody on 4k imo and continues to do so.

    So in other words is TV sales are down. And only people who are gullible to waste money on 4k. Which has hardly has any content for it. Is the only people who are bothering to buy TVs.
