Want An Apple TV 4K For $30 Off? Apple Is Offering Them, But With A Catch
Stephan Jukic – February 5, 2018
That’s right, an Apple TV 4K can be yours for just $149 and $169 for the 32GB and 64GB models respectively. This isn’t exactly a huge savings but these are Apple products after all, and fairly new-issue ones at that. The catch behind the discount however: they’re not brand spanking new. Instead, Apple is offering them as refurbished Apple TV boxes.
This is the company’s second wave of refurbished 2017 product offerings after the recent addition of iPhone 7 and 7 Plus editions to the Apple Store. In both cases, the slightly used products were made available for the first time ever in the U.S in this way.
Now, we’ve warned our readers here before about buying refurbished 4K or any other kind of electronics. Our main post on that particular potential pitfall was focused mainly at used discount 4K TVs but the warnings we covered easily apply to all sorts of other pricey electronics. However, in this case, we’re seriously confident that Apple’s offer is pretty solid.
For its part, Apple firmly states that its refurbished Apple TV 4K models (and the iPhone 7 models that came before them) are thoroughly tested, inspected, cleaned up and professionally repackaged with a completely new white box and all the usual trimmings. They’re also completely covered by the same standard one year warranty that Apple gives with its completely new products. As we explained in our refurbished products post, two of the major possible pitfalls to them involve poor warranty protection and a less than stellar refurbishing job that might even mean low-quality alternative components being inside a name brand product. Apple has ruled out both of these for these used Apple TV editions so the $30 discount is a great idea overall. You literally have nothing to lose by going for it in this case.
Other resellers can be found online offering even cheaper refurbished Apple TV 4K models but we can’t really vouch for these being 100% on their product quality. This Apple deal is modest but at least rock solid.
We should also note that refurbished 4th Generation Apple TV HD models are being sold on the same page for prices of $129 and $139 for the 32 and 64GB versions respectively, but if you own a 4K TV, seriously, forget these. Apple TV HD was out of date the minute it hit the shelves in 2015.
Apple has also begun selling refurbished second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro models as of this January on its website. So if you want to shave a few bucks off an Apple TV 4K, an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus and a iPad Pro, here’s a nice chance.
The Apple TV 4K, which we thoroughly reviewed at the link right above, offers up a huge package of streaming media options which include access to the ultra HD HDR and non-4K content offerings of Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Video and many other apps. Two major bonuses offered by the Apple TV 4K over rival UHD media streamers include support for Dolby Vision high dynamic range (in case you own a Dolby Vision 4K TV) and access to the remarkably massive 4K HDR movie and content library of iTunes.
