These Feature-Loaded 4K HDR Blu-Ray Releases Are Coming in March & April
Stephan Jukic – March 3, 2019
Samsung may be pulling out of the market for 4K Blu-ray devices and prompting lots of speculating that this fairly young disc format is dead but this isn’t stopping some studios from keeping up with new 4K Blu-ray releases. This is damn good to see, since the 4K Blu-ray format is honestly one of the most vividly refined methods in existence on the consumer market for watching movies in ultra HD and with HDR if your TV supports it. An added bonus: Building up a 4K Blu-ray collection is great for being sure that you truly own your own UHD entertainment selections.
With all that said, while streaming may be capturing the lion’s share of the UHD home entertainment market, the following upcoming 4K Blu-ray titles are absolutely worth a look if you prefer physical UDH HDR media.
If you don’t happen to own a 4K TV quite yet or want to update the one you do have so it also comes with some serious HDR power, we also recommend these guides to the best available to today:
Starting things off, we have the upcoming release of Guillermo del Toro’s “Hellboy” to 4K HDR Blu-ray. This 2004 movie that kicked off a whole franchise of associated content like the animated “Hellboy” series –which also comes to 4K HDR Blu-ray as of April 2—is getting its release on March the 5th. The sequel to “Hellboy” is also slated for a May release.
“Hellboy” (2004) stars Ron Perlmann as the now famous supernatural crime-fighting demon “Hellboy” and was directed by the almost legendary fantasy horror creator Guillermo del Toro, whose other critically acclaimed movie credits include “Pan’s Labyrinth”, “Pacific Rim” and “The Hobbit”. Amazon hasn’t made the 4K Blu-ray version’s product page for “Hellboy” live yet but you can grab an HD edition very cheaply in advance if you want both for your living room or pre-order the sequel in 4K HDR Blu-ray already (being released on April 2nd)
Next up, we have “Creed II”, which is also coming to 4K HDR Blu-ray on March the 5th and if you’re a fan of sports or boxing movies, this series is a seriously good choice for your collection. “Creed II” follows the legacy of the Rocky movies and brings their spirit into the modern era with a underdog boxing champion for the next generation in the rink. Again, this too will be a 4K ultra HD Blu-ray release with HDR and it’s already available on Amazon for pre-order.
We should note here that not all 4K UHD Blu-ray titles are actually filmed and produced in native 4K. Many of them are instead filmed in native 2K then upscaled for the bigger resolution. The difference is almost unnoticeable on a UHD TV and the HDR is the just as good (as your TV is capable of displaying it) in both native 4K and upscaled 2K UHD Blu-rays but if you’re serious about having the real true 3840×2160 pixel experience, this guide to native 4K BD titles is useful. It covers all current releases.
