These Sony 2016 And 2017 4K HDR TVs Get Amazon Echo Voice Compatibility
Juan Carlos Ropel, July 25, 2017
Sony has recently announced that they will be adding support for Amazon Echo devices to their 2017 Android Smart TVs, included within the recent firmware updates of Alexa Skills. Now users of 2016-2017 Sony 4K HDR televisions will be able to Power ON/OFF the TV, change channel by number or name, control volume, change input and control playback for DVR or streaming content.
Here is the complete list of Sony Android TVs that support Amazon Alexa:
Strangely, among the 2016 lineup of 4K TVs from Sony, while budget models like the very low priced X800D, X700D and X750 are currently getting Amazon Echo support, none of the premium 2016 4K HDR models such as the X930D or X40D have been listed as compatible by Sony on its information page for this update.
Sony has also stated that:
“Supported models have the TV Control Setup with Amazon Alexa app on the Home screen. You do not manually install this app, it will automatically install on supported TVs. If the app is not on the home screen, your TV may not be supported yet. Make sure your TV is set to automatically receive updates.”
If you own one of the above Sony 4K TVs, you’ll need to do the following to control your Android TV with Amazon Alexa-enabled Devices:
- Launch the “TV Control Setup with Amazon Alexa” app from the Home screen of your Sony’s Android TV.
- Follow the directions to select a Google account and name your TV.
- When instructed, return to this skill in the Alexa App on your phone to enable, link accounts, and discover your devices.
- Return to your TV to complete setup.
As we are seeing with Alexa, Siri and Google Home, voice control is becoming the easiest and most practical way to interact with domestic technology. With the inclusion of Amazon Echo, Echo Show, and Echo Dot into recent models of Sony 4K HDR televisions with Android TV, now we can just ask Alexa to turn on the Television to watch Game Of Thrones or the football game and completely enjoy the comfort and the fantastic beauty delivered by Sony’s LED and OLED 4K HDR flagship televisions, which we have reviewed extensively and ranked very highly in our Top TV listings on this site.
The firmware update for the above-mentioned TVs are now available to download. However, you must keep in mind that this feature is currently only supported in the United States. The release dates for other countries and regions have yet to be announced.
