The Visual Beauty Of Blade Runner 2049 Is Coming To 4K HDR Blu-ray

When Blade Runner 2049 got its theatrical release in October of this year, millions of people (including this writer) went to see it knowing that even if the plot tanked, they could at least enjoy the sheer visual spectacle that the movie promised. In this aspect, it absolutely didn’t disappoint. Despite some weaknesses in the otherwise pretty decent storyline, which stars Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright and Harrison Ford, the movie’s imagery is simply haunting in its beauty.

Now, this same visual wonder is coming to home theater in a format that will show it off like no other visual media in history has been able to do for movies of this type: Warner Home Video has announced the official release dates for director Denis Villeneuve’s Sci Fi masterpiece and they’ve listed all the cool special features that will be coming with the 4K ultra HD HDR Blu-ray edition of the film.

Unfortunately though, this release date comes only after the end of the year, so no Blade Runner hard copy boxing day present at least for the 4K version for fans of the franchise. Unlike the Digital HD version, which will be released on December 26th, the 4K ultra HD Blu-ray, 1080p Blu-ray and DVD versions only come out as of January 16th, 2018.

The extra wait time might be a bit annoying but it should truly be particularly worthwhile for this particular film. It’s practically made to be a stunner when viewed with full HDR mastering on the right kind of full high dynamic range 4K TV (the bigger the better at that). The range of futuristic visuals, the sheer artfulness of certain scenes and the surrealistic contrasts of color and tone that are fleshed out throughout Blade Runner 2049 all serve to create an atmosphere which nearly jumps out of the screen with its strange but compelling vividness.

As for the story itself, those of you who loved the cult classic original Blade Runner from 1981 should be fairly familiar with the basics. The new edition takes off a couple decades after the first movie’s timeline finished, with a tough young replicant hunter played by Ryan Gosling chasing down clues to a seemingly impossible mystery about artificial life and its capacity for self-reproduction. Further enhancing the often gritty neo noir atmosphere of the film is Gosling’s tough police boss, played by Robin Wright of “House of Cards” fame and Jared Leto takes on a creepy role as Niander Wallace, the deeply sinister head of the gigantic Wallace Corporation, which manufactures the humanoid replicant androids that form the core of the film’s central mystery.

You can now pre-order the full 4K ultra HD Blu-ray version of the movie from for a price that has already been discounted and if you are a Sci Fi fan who does own a full 4K HDR TV, we seriously recommend this particular title as a key part of your collection. Few movies will deliver a richer high dynamic range experience. We should also note that Blade Runner 2049 features Dolby Atmos audio along with its HDR.

The main bonus features that come as part of the bargain are also pretty numerous:

  • Designing The World of Blade Runner 2049
  • To Be Human: Casting Blade Runner 2049
  • Prologues: 2036: Nexus Dawn
  • Prologues: 2048: Nowhere to Run
