While the new 2017 Nvidia Shield 4K set-top box and gaming console may be hogging most of the attention for NVIDIA-related news, the older but still excellent Shield 2015 set-top box is also getting its own enhancements. What’s more, given the relatively modest improvements that the 2017 Shield gives over its 2015 cousin, many users might be tempted to forego the newer device thanks to what the 2015 box is getting.

NVIDIA has now released an Android 7.0 Nougat update for the 2015 Shield and along with this, the device is also getting support for 4K HDR content from assorted sources.  With the new firmware update and its Nougat addition, the Shield is now able to more closely resemble the newer model in its content access and user interface. This means that it now comes with key features for gaming, video watching, smart home support (The inclusion of Google Assistant being a major bonus) and the use of the NVIDIA Spot device that’s coming later in 2017 for superior connectivity around the home.

The combination of 4K HDR support and Nougat functionality in the 2015 Shield also means that users will be able to watch 4K UHD content from Amazon Prime Instant Video as an initial source of HDR entertainment but this will extend to other streaming content providers on the Shield as well soon. Furthermore, the new updates will allow gamers to enjoy the power of NVIDIA GameStream for streaming of gameplay from a GeForce powered PC you might own right to the shield and your TV. Other improvements from Nougat include Google Cast support for HBO, support for high-end speaker configurations in Plex and a new Pause function for the Shield’s remote control. This can now be used by double tapping the volume slider on the remote.

GeForce Now for streaming PC games is a robust new addition for 4K gamers in particular since it supports gameplay from PCs with even GPUs as powerful as the relatively new GTX 1080 from the same gaming brand. Then, to sweeten the Shield pot even further, NVIDIA has added in several new games for the NVIDIA Games app. These include titles like The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, The Witness and No Man’s Sky among others. There’s even a new feature for checking out the video feed from a Nest Cam home security camera through the Nvidia Games app.

The firmware update that’s bringing all of these features to the older Shield is called Shield Experience Upgrade 5.0.
