The Middle East is getting a new 4K IPTV service thanks to Etisalat and Huawei
Stephan Jukic – December 29, 2015
As of the first quarter of 2016, the new Etisalat IPTV 4K UHD service will be available to customers of the company’s eLife service in the UAE and in other Middle Eastern and African markets some time thereafter.
Etisalat announced the upcoming release of their service today, Tuesday the 29th of December and also explained that it has partnered up with Chinese technology giant Huawei to open up their UAE subscriber market to eLife’s first ever 4K ultra HD IPTV service for the Middle East and Africa (MEA).
The service will be available to Etisalat’s eLife customers in the Emirates at some point in the first three months of 2016.
Furthermore according to Etisalat, their eLife customers will now be able to enjoy the benefits of access to a 4K Linea Channel and Video on Demand as well through the company’s new 4K UHD set-top box. Resolution provided by the upcoming new service will be in the standard 4K Ultra HD measurement of 3840 x 2160 pixels and will promise the sort of superior picture quality and superb sharpness that 4K resolution is known for producing. Customers who wish to access the service, in addition to needing an eLife subscription and the attendant 4K UHD set-top box will also have to own a compatible 4K TV with HDMI support.
We don’t yet know if the service will also require HDCP 2.2 and HEVC (H.265) support in a given TV but it stands to reason that both will be spec requirements. However, since virtually all modern (2014 and 2015) 4K TVs come with these specs baked into them, this shouldn’t be a problem for most 4K TV owning subscribers.
In comments delivered on the new service, Rashed Al Abber, Vice president of Consumer Product Innovation at Etisalat explained that, “We are committed to bringing the most advanced TV viewing experience to our customers, be it through the quality of content or video. We were the first to bring IPTV solutions to the UAE a few years ago and now we are introducing 4K technology, which is another revolution in home entertainment and video. We are delighted to work with Huawei, enabling our customers to enjoy an Imax-like experience at home”.
Peng Xiongji, General Manager of Huawei UAE also added that the cooperation between the two companies in delivering the assorted technologies necessary for the transmission of this new 4K ultra HD service to eLife subscribers in the Middle East will offer superior service quality within the region.
Pricing and content selection details on the upcoming 4K UHD eLife service aren’t yet available as far as we can tell but more information on both should emerge sometime in the next month. In any case, the new service from these two companies will only add to the growing selection of 4K ultra HD entertainment content options for consumers all over the world.
