Star Wars: The Last Jedi Coming For Early 2018 4K Ultra HD HDR Blu-ray Release
Stephan Jukic – December 14, 2017
The list of available 4K UHD Blu-ray titles for today’s powerful new ultra HD HDR TVs is constantly growing and some of the most particularly heavy additions to the roster are major new release movies (with older but 4K HDR-Remastered titles sprinkled in for release between them) from the several major film studios that now support the UHD Blu-ray format. Thus, obviously enough, we can be fairly sure that any new movie we see hitting theaters from here onwards is going to eventually be slated for its own 4K Blu-ray package. That said, some films definitely create more excitement than others.
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is without a doubt one of these titles and the newest, latest and -according to some critics- best ever of all the huge Star Wars franchise movie releases is already slated for an upcoming pre-order option for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc format.
Disney and Lucasfilm have made no official announcement about this movie’s release to the 4K HDR disc format but from rumors we’ve been hearing, at least five major international and domestic retailers are indicating that “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is on the way in 4K UHD Blu-ray with HDR for some time in the early months of 2018, with a particularly likely release date between the end of the first quarter of 2018 and the beginning of the second quarter.
Other details about this major Star Wars film’s production lend further credence to the above. “The Last Jedi” was mastered to a full native 4K Digital Intermediate and we’re fairly sure that the disc will also come with native Dolby Atmos audio support as well. Most importantly, there are already reputable and well-established overseas retailers out there that have started listing the 4K Blu-ray version of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” on their websites along with HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D and DVD SKU models of the movie.
So once again, the above isn’t anything close to official but it is extremely plausible given the recent and growing tendency of major movie studios to make sure they also push out a 4K Blu-ray version of their biggest box office releases. On the other hand, “Star Wars: Rogue One” went to home media months ago and we’re still waiting to see its own 4K UHD Blu-ray version, so let’s hope that “The Last Jedi” really does follow a different path as these rumors suggest.
