Sony’s New 2019 X800M2 4K HDR Blu-ray Player Delivers Premium HDR

4K ultra HD Blu-ray players have gone down in price by quite a lot in recent years but the premium market still has its little niche and Sony has now entered it based on what they showed off at CES 2018. Their latest 4K Blu-ray device, the X800M2 could possibly be considered a worthy replacement to their previous ultra HD Blu-ray device, the X800.

What the new player offers as a major extra however is Dolby Vision HDR, something that Sony’s X800 lacked even though a still cheaper version, the X700 did come with Dolby (but didn’t allow 4K streaming from any app sources except for YouTube). The X800M2 combines the best of both worlds in a device that is more expensive than the X800 or X700 Sony devices but which also comes with a premium touch thanks mainly to the inclusion of Dolby Vision. Since Sony’s own premium and mid-range 4K HDR TVs all now support Dolby Vision HDR, it only makes sense that the company’s other 4K media devices do the same thing.

In terms of its other specs, the X800M2 supports the obvious, which is full 4K ultra HD resolution from Blu-ray disc media, streaming video sources and other devices. Aside from this it also supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision HDR formats as well as Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG), giving it a complete HDR playback coverage. There’s also support for Hi-Res audio in the X800M2 and in addition to this you get other features like DSD and SACD/DVD-A. Unlike the X700, the X800M2 lets you stream 4K video from multiple apps including YouTube and Netflix but what we don’t yet know is if this 4K app media streaming capacity includes HDR as well.

Sony hasn’t yet announced pricing or availability for the X800M2 but it will probably go on sale well before summer rolls around.
