Meet Sony’s new liquid cooled powerhouse 4K projector with enhanced color and HDR
Stephan Jukic – October 20, 2015
Sony remains the undisputed king of 4K UHD home video projectors of all types and their latest awesome –and very expensive—model is more proof of this technological leadership.
The new VPL-VW5000ES is one particular piece of home entertainment technology that should have absolutely no problem competing with teven the best 4K TVs in terms of brightness or picture quality and detail. This new machine from Sony pretty much beats every other home theater projection system from Sony that we’ve looked at or reviewed so far and really delivers some powerhouse specs.
Featuring a new SXRD laser light engine which delivers razor sharp 4K resolution in combination with high dynamic range (HDR) at as many as 5000 lumens, the VW5000ES is way ahead of the two previous and much “cheaper” Sony projector models we’ve reviewed, which could manage only 1800 lumens of brightness at best.
Furthermore, in addition to HDR, the VW5000ES also delivers a massively enhanced full DCP-P3 digital color space gamut which matches that of professional digital movie theaters in the USA. And the VW5000ES can also be professionally calibrated to match the same ITU-R BT.2020 color space used in top-shelf 4K UHD TVs such as Sony’s X940C HDR UHD model.
What’s even more unique about the new VW5000ES is its internal solution for heat management. Video projectors, and especially projectors that deliver a massive 5000 lumens of brightness, can get quite hot and thus the VW5000ES comes with its own built-in liquid cooling system to boot. This is a step beyond the fans usually used in most home theater projector cooling systems and the liquid system enables the VW5000ES to operate at a very low noise level of just 32 decibels.
The new Sony projector is shipping to buyers with a standard powered lens that offers a zoom ratio from 1.27 to 2.73:1 and a lens shift capacity of +/- 80% vertical and +/- 31% horizontal to offer a high degree of mounting flexibility for assorted location layouts. The VW5000ES can also be either front or rear-mounted. There is also an optional short-throw lens available for the VW5000ES if you want even greater flexibility and Sony is currently taking pre-orders for this new home theater powerhouse they’re releasing.
The only catch here is that the new VW5000ES 4K projector sells for a very hefty $60,000 for delivery in spring of 2016.
For those of you who are looking for a more economical solution, Sony has also announced the release of three other new 4K home theater projectors with HDR built into them for considerably lower prices. These are the the VPL-VW665ES ($14,999) and the VPL-VW365ES ($9,999).
