Sony to release its first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movies with HDR and next-gen audio in early 2016
Stephan Jukic – November 10, 2015
For those of use who’ve been waiting to see the much anticipated new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs come out in time for the 2015 Christmas Holidays, it’s getting ever more likely that a bit of disappointment and some more waiting are both in order.
However, at least early 2016 is looking like a sure-fire time-frame for the arrival of 4K Blu-ray in all its glory and the latest news from Sony Pictures seems to bear out this belief. Why? Because Sony has announced that their new 4K ultra HD Blu-ray discs will be going on sale as of “early 2016”, which could be any time within a space of at least three months following January 1st.
Either way, we can say for sure that the discs will miss the year-end 4K Blu-ray release date that had originally been forecast by the Blu-ray Disc Association itself all the way back in August of 2015, and almost needless to say, the new discs will also miss the massive year-end holiday shopping frenzies of 2015.
When the new Sony catalog of movies and other content does hit consumers eyes, we can almost certainly expect to see titles like “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”, “Hancock”, “Chappie”, “Pineapple Express” and kid-friendly titles like “Smurfs 2” to be included as some of the earlier releases in Blu-rays new 4K UHD disc format.
Other movies will almost certainly follow in droves and some other early releases will probably include “Fury”, “Captain Philips” and even older titles like “Ghostbusters”, “The Fifth Element” and others.
What’s even more interesting about the new 4K Blu-ray releases that we can expect from Sony and about even the first waves of 4K UHD Blu-ray players themselves is the fact that all are going to come with true next generation 4K ultra HD content that includes high dynamic range and a new type of immersive audio formatting that’s also being called “next-gen” by Sony.
Unfortunately, we still have no specific release dates for any of these cool new entertainment options, even if they give more potentially powerful reason to buy a 4K Ultra HD TV during the holiday season.
