Rumors of an impending 4K smartphone screen get tangible: Sony spokesperson claims the Xperia Z5 will have one
Stephan Jukic – August 31, 2015
As we’ve covered repeatedly, rumors of 4K ultra HD displays for the tiny screens of new and upcoming smartphones have been circulating for at least a year now, and in all cases to date, these rumors have proven to be duds. Furthermore, they were almost always very speculative things.
Now however, the latest such rumors are heating up to a previously unseen level of pitch and plausibility. These concern the upcoming Xperia Z5 phone from Sony and according to a leaked video from Clubic.com, the marketing director for Sony claims that the company will be unveiling both a 5.2 inch Z5 and a 5.5 inch version of the same as a “premium” model with a 4K UHD screen, not just the 4K camera technology found in several different smartpnoe models from assorted phone makers.
The premium Z5 will also pack in an absolutely massive 23 megapixel camera with a 0.03 second autofocus and a 5x digital zoom –details which also serve to confirm previous leaks we’ve seen about the Z5.
Furthermore, the new flagship phone will be as soundly waterproof and dustproof as the very robust Xperia Z3+ model was and will also feature one other unique twist to its design. This is a MicroUSB connector that’s also waterproof even without a cover tap.
Additionally, the completely metallic phone will retail Sony’s boxy design language completely with a more “premium” looking logo engraved into the side of the phone as well. On top of all the above new traits, the larger Z5 with the 4K screen will be Sony’s first mobile device with a fingerprint scanning sensor, built into the phone’s small side power button.
Other specs that have circulated (but which have less confirmation), claim that the two new Z5s and at least the larger Z5will come equipped with the powerful and 4K-capable Snapdragon 810 System on a Chip processor built by Qualcomm specifically with 4K resolution and graphics in mind. Furthermore, we can supposedly expect a 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal memory for the larger Z5.
The smaller of the two phones, the 5.3 inch Z5, will come with a 1080p HD screen instead of 4K but will share the remaining specs with its bigger brother.
All of the above is still part of the tech rumor mill regardless of what the video with the Sony executive says and until Sony actually makes a public announcement, 4K display in a smartphone is still just an interesting idea. However, if these much more reinforced speculations are true, we’ll almost certainly see them get announced at the upcoming IFA 2015 event in Berlin on September the 9th.
Sony has apparently been pulling copies of the following leaked video due to claims of copyright infringement, but a quick YouTube search reveals that several versions are still online (2:12 second video clip)
