Meet Samsung’s new ATIV Book 9 Pro: a powerhouse 4K Laptop like few others
Stephan Jukic – November 4, 2015
When it comes to manufacturing 4K UHD TVs, Samsung is one of the best known and best equipped companies on the market, with numerous highly acclaimed UHD TVs under its belt and plenty of uniquely innovative expertise behind their technology. After all, this is one of the first companies to have developed HDR TV models for the consumer market and one of the pioneers behind quantum dot color enhancement as well.
The same applies to Samsung’s lines of 4K Ultra HD PC monitors and some of their models are excellent choices for all ends of the PC user spectrum, from 4K gamers to professional designers who need top-notch caliber in their screen’s visual specs.
However, where this company isn’t so well known for superb quality is in the laptop market. Not because Samsung makes crappy laptops but more because they simply aren’t known for making laptops at all. Until now..
This is where the ATIV Book 9 Pro laptop comes into the picture. First introduced to consumers and tech watchers only very recently, the new laptop is the direct descendant of Samsung’s ATIV Pro 9 laptop that was introduced to the market at CES 2015 in January. Now, the even newer, more powerful ATIV Book 9 Pro notebook features some truly supercharged, cutting edge specs across the board and they’re all packaged into one ultra-thin, extremely light chassis.
The ATIV Book 9 Pro basically comes with all the hardware goodies any serious 4K UHD laptop fan could possibly want, with some of the newest sixth-generation Intel processors, a massively dense 4K ultra HD display with 3840 x 2160 pixels and some excellent graphics processing power.
With the Book 9 Pro, what you get your hands on is Samsung’s first ever 4K laptop and a serious contender for ranking among other powerhouse 4K UHD machines from Toshiba, Dell, Alienware and Acer. The Book 9 Pro comes with one of Intel’s hardcore new Core i7 Skylake processors, 4K-ready HDMI 2.0 port connectivity, USB Type-C connections, a lightning-quick 256GB SSD storage memory and most importantly for a 4K UHD machine, its own discrete GPU in the form of a very respectable Nvidia GeForce 950M graphics card. The only weak point on this cool little laptop so far seems to be its RAM, which starts out at only 8GB, which is hardly something to write home about.
Nonetheless, the rest of this machine’s specs really do stand out well above those of conventional laptops and put the Book 9 Pro well into the range of 4K notebook power. Consequently, you really shouldn’t be surprised to know that Samsung’s new 4K laptop also comes with a relatively steep $1600 price tag.
What’s also highly impressive –if it turns out to be true in practice—is the claim by Samsung that their new laptop can manage roughly 6.5 hours of battery—run usage from a single full charge. By the standards of 4K laptops, which normally drain lots of power just to keep pushing around al those 8.29 million pixels on their screens, this kind of battery life is definitely above the average. Most of the 4K laptops we’ve reviewed to-date can barely chuff along to 4.5 hours and some even die after only a couple hours due to their ultra HD screens. If the battery power claims from Samsung are true or not is something we’ll have to see during a review somewhere down the road.
The new ATIV Book 9 Pro should be available to interested customers as of this month (November) from Samsung.com and from Best Buy.
