Release Date for Sony’s 4K capable Xperia Z3 Smartphone Almost Certainly in September
by Stephan Jukic – August 18th, 2014
Instead of letting their current flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z2, be the top of the line Sony phone of 2014, Sony is already going ahead with the upcoming release of the Z2s successor in the form of the even more powerful Z3.
Given that Sony’s traditional release schedule for new phones is roughly nine months after the release of the previous version, the most plausible internet rumors circulating right now are betting heavily that the new Z3 is going to be unveiled by Sony at the IFA 2014 Electronics Fair in Berlin German, which is being held between September the 5th and the 10th, in just over 15 days.
Furthermore, the FCC has given full U.S clearance to the Xperia Z3 and its smaller, cheaper cousin the Xperia Z3 Compact only recently, which is all the more reason to believe in the idea of an early September release date.
However, despite the likelihood of this phone coming out in just over a couple of weeks, the specs it’s expected to have are still based mostly on rumors.
While the Z3 will obviously be a superior phone to its predecessor the Z2, how much better is still up in the air. There have been a number of rumors about really exciting features such as 4K resolution screen and a much better 4K capable camera in the Z3 but how likely these are is still quite speculative. However, given that Sony is one of the biggest corporate promoters of 4K technology (which it builds into many other entertainment electronics it builds), it wouldn’t at all be surprising if they used their newest, shiniest phones to promote the resolution format in new and interesting ways.
Here are some possible specs it could definitely come with:
In terms of the more exotic rumors, one rumored possibility was an actual 4K screen resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels that would, if true, make this the first ever phone with a UHD screen resolution at that level. However, it seems more likely that we won’t be seeing the first 4K screens in smartphones until the beginnings of 2015 at the earliest and if there is a UHD screen on the Xperia Z3, it will more likely be 2K, meaning 2048 × 1556 pixels of resolution.
One 4K feature the Xperia Z3 will definitely have is a video camera capable of the resolution clarity. The Z2 already has this capacity but can shoot no more than 5 minutes of 4K video at a time, so while the Z3 is sure to come with an at least equally powerful 4K camera, it’s likely that the 5 minute limit will have been improved. At the very least, it’s expected to have a 20.7 megapixel camera that will offer some truly superb still image quality.
One thing that reinforces the above-mentioned possibility of a 4K video camera that can shoot longer footage clips is the processors the Z3 is rumored to be coming with. This Sony phone could sport a very powerful combo of a 2.4 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and an Adreno 330 GPU (graphics card). Both of these will go a long way towards making the Z3s video playing and shooting capacities work really smoothly.
The phone will also definitely feature at least 3 GB of RAM and an internal memory of 16GB, both of which are very respectable. As for screen size, that’s pretty reliably confirmed at 5.2 inches, though some specs related rumors claim that instead of 4K or even the much lighter but still futuristic 2K resolution, the Xperia Z3 will come with a perfectly conventional 1080p conventional HD screen pixilation.
The OS on the Z3 will be the latest version of Android, 4.4.4 KitKat.
