An Overview of Samsung’s New 32 Inch Ultra HD PC Monitor, the UD970

With the recent September release of its new Ultra HD 4K UD970 PC display monitor, Samsung has definitely set a high standard for the entire (still small) 4K PC monitor market. In basic terms, the UD970 could indeed be the monitor against which all competitors get compared.
For starters, Samsung already has a well established reputation as a manufacturer of some of the best known and most high tech 4K TVs on the market and although the company is now starting to see stiff competition from Panasonic, Sony and, most notably, LG, consumers can still consider it a leader in the high end 4K market.
This reason alone puts a lot of weight to the quality one can expect from the UD970. However, a look at the devices specs and tech details underlines this analysis.
First of all, the unit comes with a stand already attached to it. This means it has no parts that can be lost or forgotten during shipping. The pedestal that comes with the 970 allows for a range of adjustments in different directions. These include 30 degrees of left to right swivel, 90 degrees of pivot, 25 degrees of up and down tilt and an overall up-down range of 5 inches.
Furthermore, in landscape mode, the UD970 is 24.5 inches high and 28.7 inches wide with an 11 inch deep rectangular base. These are some very decent display specs for 4K gamers and professionals looking for a large PC screen that offers brilliant 4K clarity for design projects.
It’s also worth noting that, due to its 32 inch screen, the Samsung monitor will scale very nicely with Windows operating systems, particularly Windows 8 and 9. Given the pixels density inherent per square inch of display space on a PC monitor, PPI (pixels per inch) below 170 will generally result in much better scaled screen elements in a Windows environment and this PPI is what’s normally found on monitors that are larger than 28 inches.
As for connectivity inputs, the UD970 comes with four different ports. One for HDMI 1.4, one for DVI-D and two DisplayPort 1.2 inputs. While the lack of HDMI 2.0 is a bit of a sore point, the currently available GPUs for PCs don’t support it anyway so the DisplayPort 1.2 option is a fine substitute for connecting the screen and its 4K resolution to a PC that’s going to be used for Ultra HD gaming.
The specs bear this connectivity issue out in fact, given that the monitor can be used at 30 Hz (30 frames per second) via its HDMI port and at 60Hz (60 fps) through its DVI-D and DisplayPort inputs.
And of course, the native resolution of the UD970 is a standard 4K pixel configuration of 3840 x 2160 pixels. Interestingly, given that this 4K resolution offers just over four times what a user gets with Full HD at 1920 x 1080 pixels, the UD970 can also be configured to a four section split-screen mode in which each section can display separate visuals at Full HD resolution.
The monitor comes with a direct AC input, a C15 power cord and a USB 3.0 host cable that’s useful for the UD970’s four USB 3.0 ports (two of which can be used as “supercharging” outputs.
In terms of other visual specs, this PC monitor gives excellent black-level visuals and also uses what is called PLS technology, which is Samsung’s version of IPS display for 4K screens. The 970 also continues to display vibrant colors when viewed from an angle and offers a full 10 bit color depth.
Overall, this is one very well designed 4K PC monitor that would make a highly useful tool for digital designers, engineers, architects and people who need to perform high resolution medical imaging. However, it does cost $1,999 at current retail prices.
Nonetheless, for the more budget minded, Samsung has also released a smaller 28 inch version of the UD970 with the same technical specs but at a retail price of just $599. It’s called the UD590.
