Optoma’s New P1 4K HDR Short Throw Projector Delivers Everything In One
Stephan Jukic – January 10, 2019
That’s right, the new P1 Smart 4K UHD Laser Cinema HDR Short Throw Porjector pretty much packs everything you need for a powerhouse 4K home theater experience right into one single package.
This model, recently unveiled at CES 2019, offers up a 100 inch image from just 10 inches away, includes 4K resolution, high dynamic range support and even comes with a built-in soundbar that delivers fairly decent performance.
According to Optoma, the newly unveiled P1 model is a “smart-home-enabled all-in-one AV system” with delivery of a projected image of up to 100 inches, a powerful 3000 lumens brightness capacity and support for both HDR10 and HLG. Dolby Vision isn’t supported unfortunately but the P1 does offer Dolby Digital Plus audio capacity.
We should note here that this isn’t a native 4K ultra HD projector and that as far as wel can tell from Optoma’s release information on its functionality, this model doesn’t even support pixel-shifted 4K in which the right amount (8.29 million) of pixels is technically shown by shifting rapidly between two sets ot roughly 4 million pixels. Instead, the Optoma upscales a native 1080p image to what they claim amounts to 8.3 million pixels of total projected sharpness. We’re not quite sure how they pull this off without being limited to just 2k upscaled resolution but the brand is know for producing excellent home theater projection at a reasonable price so we’re willing to at least give them the benefit of the doubt on overall quality.
As for the projector’s sound bar, it’s found along the front-facing edge of the device, where it integrates with the rest of the projector and offers aluminum full-range drivers and some decently robust sound output. We don’t know if the sound bar offers subwoofer-out capability but there is Dolby Digital Plus compatibility. The Optoma P1 also comes with voice control support for Amazon Alexa AND Google Assistant, which is pretty cool.
Some additional specs for the new projector model include:
- 3,000 ANSI lumens
- 4K UHD 8.3M-pixel resolution
- HDR10- and HLG-compatible
- Mercury-free DuraCore laser light technology with 20,000-hour lifetime
- 100-inch image at 10 inches from the wall
- Dolby Digital Plus compatibility
- Optoma Connect App for iOS/Android
- Remote controller features an air mouse function for faster channel selection
- Google Assistant / Alexa voice assistant support
Optoma is releasing the P1 Smart 4K UHD Laser Cinema mid-year for a retail price of $2,999. This seems a bit steep for upscaled 4K resolution but the combination of other specs listed for this model makes for a fairly tempting offer.
