Netflix is Going to Make 4 New Adam Sandler Movies, Apparently in 4K
by Stephan Jukic – October 3, 2014
First there was word that Netflix would debut their first ever original movie made by the company in the form of a sequel to the successful film “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”, the streaming media company has also announced that they’re getting ready to make four new, Netflix Original films with the actor Adam Sandler.
According to the company’s public announcement, “Netflix, the world’s leading internet TV network, will be the exclusive home of four feature films starring and produced by comic icon Adam Sandler, whose movies have delighted hundreds of millions of fans all over the world.”
The Netflix announcement also goes on to give more details about the Sandler deal by explaining that the four films will be available exclusively to members of the nearly 50 countries where the company’s streaming service is operating. The company also noted that “current studio film commitments are not included in this deal.”
Netflix has already proven its mettle with excellent TV shows such as “House of Cards” with Kevin Spacey and the prison comedy/drama series “Orange is the New Black”.
Now, the company is clearly placing its sights on creating a whole line of its own original movies with big name stars and a big screen viewing experience in the form of streaming releases and delivery to IMAX theaters in select locations.
The first of these films is the movie “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend”, which is expected to go straight to both streaming and IMAX release very shortly.
The Adam Sandler films are still well away from completion and public release but they are expected to be only a part of a larger, much larger, plan by Netflix to create original movies at a rate of as many as 10 per year.
The Sandler films are being made in partnership with Adam Sandler’s company Happy Madison Productions, which has been responsible for such films as “Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigalo”, “Little Nicky” and “Mr. Deeds”.
As for when we can expect to see these four new films released on streaming or IMAX: According to Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos, Adam Sandler typically makes about one movie a year and his deal with Netflix will have to revolve around some other commitments that both parties have but all four movies will be four separate projects. This is a vague answer, but we can assume that all four movies will be available within roughly four years.
While Netflix has not yet actually stated that the new Sandler movies or any of its other planned films will be released in streaming 4K format, the idea makes a great deal of sense considering the company’s previous and still running stance as a major supporter of 4K resolution.
The company has already created and expanded a selection of 4K movies and shows in its existing streaming service and its main original series, “House of Cards” is available in 4K UHD to customers with Ultra HD TVs.
Furthermore, the company has already stated earlier this year that they will be filming all of their upcoming original content in 4K. The planned Sandler movies definitely fall under this category and, given their lead actor, are a perfect platform for further promoting 4K resolution as the company has already done with its other selections of content available in Ultra HD.
Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see what Netflix does before we can completely confirm the 4K resolution for their original movies
