Meet the Tough, Wateproof New Olympus TG-5 4K UHD Point & Shoot Camera
Stephan Jukic – May 17, 2017
Point-and-shoot cameras are of course generally very small and eminently designed for extreme portability while keeping some more serious photo/video shooting features that a smartphone camera lacks. There are even more than a few 4K video-capable point-and-shoots out there on the market. However, few of them look quite as ruggedly cool as the new Olympus TG-5 model.
Introduced by Olympus very recently, the TG-5 P&S compact camera offers up some fairly robust specs that many casual users and possibly even some professional photographers might like. Offering a 12-megapixel ½.3 inch CMOS sensor, a 25-100mm f/2.0 wide angle lens of 35mm equivalent and a 4x optical zoom that’s pretty decent for light photography, this little camera has some quality to offer for a wide range of users. Other robust photo/video specs of the TG-5 include a 12,800 max ISO and Olympus’s latest TruePic VIII image processing technology for clear, crisp shots on the go.
And of course, there’s the main reason why we write about the TG-5, its 4K UHD video recording capacity, which lets you grab footage at 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution in 25fps and 30fps settings. There are also video recording settings for 1080p at 25, 30, 60 60 and even 120fps (this last being especially useful to anyone who wants to do some slow motion video shooting in one extremely compact camera). Thus, while the TG-5 is certainly no Sony A7r II, it’s overall package of features combined with one very strong body make this a useful accessory even for pro field photographers.
Furthermore, as befits its look and design aim of pleasing users who want quality ultra-portable photo and video recording even in very rough locations, the TG-5’s body is designed to be waterproof, freezeproof, dustproof and even resistant to some very heavy crush pressure from blows or falls.
In-built recording features also include WiFi, GPS tracking, RAW+JPG recording and the TG-5 even comes with a 3-inch LCD display for easy settings adjustments and photo previews.
Olympus and associated retailers will start selling this very rugged little 4K mirrorless point-and-shoot camera as of June for an MSRP of $450 with the option of a specialized underwater case which extends its waterproofing to 147 feet below the waves. The waterproof case gives the TG-5 some excellent scuba diving photography chops but it’s not cheap with its $300 price tag.
