Meet the gamer-friendly, affordable and powerful new U2477PWQ 4K ultra HD monitor from AOC

While the new AOC U2477PWQ 4K ultra HD monitor may come with only 24 inches (measured diagonally) of screen space and thus be what most gamers or pro users might consider the bare minimum sized monitor for their needs, size isn’t everything when it comes to technology here.

And for that it lacks in display real estate, the U2477PWQ more than makes up for in an assortment of features and visual specs. As far as both of these areas go, AOC has created a high quality 4K UHD monitor in which a smaller screen size isn’t really so important.

The AOC U2477PWQ’s display uses a type of panel technology called PLS, which is similar to the more well-known IPS display which is recognized for its high brightness, vibrancy and great viewing angles. In the case of the U2477PWQ’s PLS display you get much of that, with a 178 degree viewing space, a 60Hz refresh rate, superb brightness and a solid 4K UHD resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. Furthermore, for all you gamers out there, this monitor boasts a response time of just 4 milliseconds, which is definitely better than the usual for IPS monitors, even if it’s not quite as lightning quick as the 1 to 2 ms response times of TN monitors (which also however suffer from weaker color rendition, angle viewing and contrast).

Some of the other specs on the latest 4K UHD monitor on the market include a solid 16.7 million color rendering capability, a brightness rating of 300 cd/m2 and a superb (for a PC monitor) contrast ratio of 1000:1. The color rating of 16.7 million means that this compact monitor only comes with 8-bit color and thus can’t quite be compared in terms of precision to more professional designer-oriented 4K monitors which also happen to sell for well over $1000 in many cases but then this monitor is clearly aimed at the gamer and more casual user market, and for both of those user types, 8-bit color is more than enough to look good.

However, what we really like about the U2477PWQ from at least this preliminary look is that it too comes with the HDMI 2.0 connectivity that we’ve started to see in more 4K UHD monitors in 2015. Previous connectivity options in most such displays included DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 1.4 as 4K video options from PC GPU to monitor but with such configurations, only the DP 1.2 would be able to deliver 4K video at 60 frames per second. Now with the inclusion of HDMI 2.0 instead of 1.4, the U2477PWQ and others like it can handle 4K @ 60Hz from more than one type of connectivity port, a useful trait for connecting them to the latest graphics cards from Nvidia or AMD and for connecting such monitors to external 4K media players down the road.

The U2477PWQ also includes (in addition to DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 2.0) a DVI port, USB 3.0 connectors and even VGA connectivity for older legacy PC connectivity.

Physically, this smaller monitor is also no slouch, with a small support stand footprint for easy positioning in almost any work or gaming space and enough versatility in terms of pivot and tilt to be a useful device. Unfortunately, there is no manual swivel built into the monitor but the U2477PWQ does offer some height adjustability.

The AOC U2477PWQ is set to go on sale at some point in this very month of November, possibly just in time for Black Friday and we can expect this powerful 4K UHD PC display to be available for an absolutely excellent price of $350 or so. This is more than reasonable for a 4K PC gaming monitor with the kinds of specs this compact machine offers. Gamers, be ready to consider this one seriously.
