Meet Philips’ new 40 Inch Brilliance Curved 4K UHD Monitor With Stunning Productivity Specs
Stephan Jukic – March 07, 2017
Philips isn’t a major name for 4K UHD TVs in the U.S market, but overseas, its prowess as a provider of excellent television display performance at a great price is well known to many consumers. This is something that the company has very successfully translated to its ultra HD monitors and some of the larger models, like the Brilliance series of PC displays are recognized for their superb visual performance and qualities as graphic design/office machines.
With this we come down to the latest of the Brilliance monitors, the BDM4037UW. As is Philips’ penchant, the BDM4037UW comes with one monstrously huge 40 inch display that almost turns this particular monitor into a 4K TV in terms of screen size, and the curvature of the new Brilliance only augments the immersive, easy-on-the-eyes feel of the BDM4037UW. As we’ve mentioned many times before on this site, we’re not particular fans of curved 4K TVs due to the mostly useless nature of the design characteristic, especially in TVs of any normal living room size. However, for 4K PC monitors, our opinion is a bit different. Due to the fact that viewing distance with a PC monitor is measured in mere inches or a couple feet at most for the majority of users, larger curved screens do really feel immersive and the Brilliance BDM4037UW delivers this immersion in spades with its 40 inches of curved 4K resolution quality. With this monitor, there’s no squinting at the content on the screen.
Moving onto other specs, the Brilliance comes with a high contrast VA panel design of the kind used in many high-end 4K TVs. This translates to superb brightness, stunningly rich black levels and some great contrast as a result. Viewing angles with VA panel monitors aren’t great but in a PC screen this shouldn’t be nearly the issue it would be on a TV screen. The VA panel of the Brilliance also offers up a very respectable 4ms response time, making this a perfectly decent PC gaming rig (as long as you don’t mind the lack of FreeSync or G-Sync for AMD or Nvidia GPUs).
Connectivity-wise, the Philips Brilliance BDM4037UW packs in the ports with good future-proofing to boot. It comes with an HDMI 1.4 port, a second HDMI 2.0 port and dual DisplayPort slots. There’s even a slightly antique VGA port built into this giant of a screen. In other words, you could easily use the Brilliance to hook together a couple PCs or a couple of different gaming consoles at the same time, and with the screen real estate to make such split connectivity work quite nicely if needed. We should also mention that the BDM4037UW includes a total of four USB 3.0 ports, one of which is also a fast-charging port.
Overall, the new 2017 Philips Brilliance shows lots of promise for a ton of different uses and with its price tag of $999, it’s pricey but not ridiculously so considering the screen space it comes with and its specs.
