LG is more known for its 4K UHD TVs and 4K PC monitors to a lesser extent but no so much of a name in the camera market, at least compared to competitors like Panasonic and Sony in this particular sector. However, this hasn’t stopped the company from unveiling a new action camera for their Friend ecosystem.

The new Action CAM LTE offers up not only 4K ultra HD video recording but also allows for mobile network support and remote access, making the little device “ideal” as a CCTV device, dashboard camera, YouTube streaming feed shooter and of course, as an action camera for sports. Most importantly as far as streaming is concerned, the Action CAM LTE can be used in all of these functions without the need for an on-hand smartphone.

The little camera itself is an IP67-rated unit that can thus be immersed in water up to a depth of one meter for as long as 30 minutes without the need for an external waterproof casing and LG plans on promptly releasing just such an external case for even more immersive 4K recording during scuba diving and surfing missions, which will put this new action shooter on par with devices like the GoPro Hero 4 Black 4K action cameras.

There is also an optional camera mount for the LTE which allows for smooth video recording while the shooter is attached to helmets, surfboards, cars, bikes and just about any other fast moving object.

Furthermore, the built-in 1400mAh battery allows for at least an hour of 4K recording and a hefty 4 hours of Full HD recording while the Action CAM LTE can also deliver 12.3 megapixel still photos while also being capable of 8.3 megapixel still extractions from its 4K video at a fairly smooth 30 frames per second. Streaming functionality can on the other hand be delivered in Full HD at 30fps.

LG has also given the Action CAM LTE an internal 2GB RAM in the LTE and the camera comes with support for MicroSD storage of up to a massive 2TB (terabytes) which you’ll probably need much of if you plan on recording several 4K videos that take up the camera’s full single charge battery life.

In other words, while perhaps not as physically robust as some competitor action cameras, the Action CAM LTE delivers excellent field recording times in 4K and Full HD resolution and this alone is definitely worth some attention.

LG will be launching the Action CAM LTE as of next month (June) in South Korea and from there the camera will become available to select world markets at unspecified later but near-term dates, starting with Europe and the U.S.
