Meet Canon’s EOS 250D, The Worlds Smallest, Highly Affordable 4K DSLR with Flexible Display
Stephan Jukic – April 16, 2019
Despite their reputation for bulkiness in comparison to their mirrorless counterparts, DSLR cameras can indeed get remarkably compact and even adding in 4K video processing power and an articulating screen need make this a problem.
This is what Canon’s newly announced EOS 250D model clearly shows, and Canon has already proclaimed the little device as the “World’s lightest DSLR”. With a total weight of just 451 grams, or 15.9 ounces with batter included, it is indeed incredibly compact by the standards of normal DSLR models. The little camera is also called the SL3 but either model number covers the same essential device. The 250D is aimed more at beginners or even younger buyers (kids and teenagers basically).
Despite this more basic market focus, the new 250D EOS model comes with a pretty wicked set of features, and most of them are more than good enough for a fairly high grade of professional photography by anyone who knows their fundamentals when it comes to good photography. Some of the essentials of the EOS 250D include the following:
- 24.1MP APS-C sensor
- Digic 8 Processor
- Dual Pixel CMOS AF
- 9-point AF system
- Optical viewfinder with a 3.0″ articulating touch screen
- Built-in Bluetooth & Wi-Fi
- Available in black or white
Beyond that we also have to note that this little shooter has the already mentioned 4K video shooting capability too. It can handle 4K ultra HD video with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels at 23.98 or 25 fps in inter-frame and uses H.264 compression to crunch that video down for easier transfer to other devices. Other video recording extras to help this along include a touch screen with dual pixel AF features and the 250D’s external audio jack. The new EOS model can of course also deliver 1080p video at 60fps and is capable of other video resolutions. Its 24.1 megapixel sensor for still shots is also pretty damn robust and ensures plenty of clear, large photos that can be cropped heavily while keeping lots of sharpness.
The Canon EOS 250D is going on sale for $599 for the body alone from B&H and gets slightly more expensive with the addition of a standard lens, but on Amazon, the same brand new body-only model is selling for a $50 less at $549, so we recommend the Amazon deal more. A full kit with lens and accessories is also available for $649.
