If you’ve been planning to get a budget-friendly 4k projector next year, BenQ has recently announced the launch of the W1700 DLP, a home theater model with support for Ultra HD, HDR and 3D at a fairly decent price.

The W1700 uses Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology, which delivers 8.3 megapixels of UHD 4K resolution using pixel-shifting technology alongside its native 1080p chipset from Texas Instruments, one step below in performance from native UHD projectors (which still unfortunately cost a lot more despite recent Sony releases that are cheaper than ever before).

The W1700 is able to produce an excellent 2200 lumens for brightness and is compatible with HDR10, which allows more vivid, brighter colours. The W1700 also uses BenQ CinematicColor’s exclusive technology in covering over 96% of Rec. 709 color gamut, enhanced with precise Delta E<3 performance, faithfully reproducing what filmmakers intended and making movies more enjoyable to watch at home according to BenQ.

BenQ´s DLP technology makes the projector lightweight and compact, and provides a 1.2x optical zoom to accommodate it in any space. For connectivity it has two HDMI 2.0 inputs compatible with HDCP 2.2 to connect to a UHD Blu-ray player or any dongle capable of reproducing 4k content, such as Google Chromecast Ultra, Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV 4K. It also comes with RS-232 and 1x USB port, and a 3.5mm analog audio jacks to connect to your home theater audio system.

The BenQ states that the W1700 will be available a little after the holidays, in January 2018 for a price that will be set at a little less than 2,000 euros, or $2300 dollars, making it one of the more affordable pixel.shift 4K projectors in the market in the upcoming year.

As stated by the President of BenQ Corporation, Conway Lee:

“W1700 brings home the magic of big-screen 4K digital cinema to the broader audience. Now anyone can enjoy spectacular 4K movie nights, complete with advanced audiovisual enhancement and HDR at an amazing value.”

Hmm, given the smaller DLP chip on here vs the .66 chip on the Optoma UHD60/65, Vivitek HK2288 and the like, I wouldn’t pay $200 more for this PJ.
