Meet Acer’s New ProDesigner PE320QK 4K UHD HDR Monitor for Pro Photographers
Stephan Jukic – May 12, 2017
First announced at a recent Acer even in NYC in the wake of several other awesome Acer 4K monitor releases for 2017, the company’s new PE320QK 4K monitor has one very robust package of specs and features to offer almost any kind of photo or video editing professional.
Now only is the PE320QK one very large piece of PC display technology with its giant 31.5 inch screen, it also comes with some superb HDR display specs that are further augmented by an included hood for extremely clear, bright display of images and video in wide color gamut, 10-bit color and excellent levels of peak brightness. For starters, Acer has developed the PE320QK with their integrated HDR Xpert technology for “a vivid contrast between lights and darks while covering a wider gamut for truly vibrant colors”, according to the company. Moving into specific metrics, the PE320QK is going to reportedly deliver 130% of the sRGB color space and a full 95% of the DCI-P3 Wide Color Gamut color space that is used as a metric of HDR color performance in today’s most advanced 4K HDR TVs as well. In fact, if it actually delivers 95% DCI-P3 color space coverage, the PE320QK will perform on par with some of the markets best HDR television models from the major brands.
Acer is also promising that the PE320QK will deliver an out-of-the-box delta E of less than 1 for some very accurate color performance. This is the same level of color performance that this brand promised for their also recently unveiled HDR BM320 4K HDR monitor. Thus we’ll have to see which of the two performs better overall. Moving along, the PE320QK comes with a VisionCare display feature for reduced eye strain during long photo editing sessions and to maximize the perception of broad display space, the new ProDesigner monitor also comes with a “ZeroFrame” design for minimal bezel thickness along all four of its edges.
In terms of peak brightness, the PE320QK will manage to deliver at least 550 nits and offers up a 4ms response time. Contrast is cited by Acer as being “100 million: 1” but this is more or less an invented ratio and since this is an IPS display (judging by its response time), we’re expecting a native actual contrast ratio that’s closer to 1000:1. The above-mentioned peak brightness is impressive for a PC monitor of any kind and even matches what we’ve seen in many HDR 4K TVs on sale today but other recently unveiled HDR 4K PC monitors like Acer’s own ultra-premium gaming-oriented Predator Acer X27 are offering peak brightness levels of up to a whopping 1000 nits (huge by PC monitor standards). On the other hand, the PE320QK will outdo its close cousin, the BM320 4K monitor’s peak brightness of just 350 nits or so.
Connectivity-wise, the PE320QK will offer u a decent package of ports including dual HDMI 2.0 slots, a single DisplayPort 1.2 port, 3 USB-C inputs (one of which is reversible for fast charging of other electronics) and an audio port as well. This new Acer ProDesigner monitor even comes with dual 2W speakers.
We don’t yet have pricing or availability information for the PE320QK but given the $1299 of the very similar BM320 ProDesigner model from this brand, we’re expecting the PE320QK to cost a small fraction more.
