Meet Acer’s newest 4K monitor, minimal bezel: maximal active screen space
by Stephan Jukic – November 12, 2014
Acer is already pretty well known for coming out with some great 4K laptops and another well-made 4K PC monitor with built-in G-Synch technology for superior on-screen performance of ultra HD visuals.
Now they’ve taken sleek innovation in a new direction with yet another PC screen that minimizes bezels to previously unseen levels in a monitor from this or most other companies.
We’re talking about the new 27 inch S277HK 4K monitor and Acer itself claims that their latest monitor is essentially frameless and also the first of its kind to ever come with HDMI 2.0 built into it.
As the photos here clearly show, the first claim isn’t entirely on the mark. There is indeed a frame though it is admittedly very, very narrow. Nonetheless, this is one very well made performance monitor that’s ideal for both gaming and design professional needs in any desktop system capable of handling full 4K ultra HD resolution at 3840 x 2160 pixels and a thoroughly smooth 60Hz refresh rate that delivers 60 frames per second of motion rendering.
This last feature is what makes this monitor such a great fit for 4K gamers in addition to design professionals
As for the HDMI 2.0 feature being completely unique to the new Acer screen, this too is not quite true. Both Seiki and Asus have also announced the development of 4K monitors with their own HDMI 2.0 ports. Both companies models are also due for imminent release so the truthfulness of Acers HDMI claim is still a matter of timing (whose model reaches the store shelves first).
All these little details notwithstanding, the new Acer monitor is truly a beautiful display device. The absolutely minimalist bordering on both the vertical and horizontal axis means a display that’s perfect for horizontal multi-screen setups (something gamers with enough of a budget should be particularly interested in). And even the slightly larger bezel at the bottom of the screen is still pretty minimal as far as PC monitors from any brand go.
This monitor is held up by a very stylish aluminum alloy stand that’s asymmetrically designed for an added air of style but which still maintains full robustness for a stable platform that’s also unobtrusive.
In terms of connectivity, the S277HK comes with the already mentioned HDMI 2.0, DVI connections, DisplayPort 1.2 and also includes a Mini DisplayPort connection. Of course, it also comes with several USB 3.0 ports too.
The monitor itself allows for display of a maximal 4K resolution of 3,840 x 2160 pixels and the built-in DTS speakers provide some very decent sound quality for a PC screen.
The 4K resolution doesn’t quite match that of some other monitor brands which offer “Cinema Grade 4K at 4096 x 2160 pixels and it comes nowhere close to the 5K resolution of Dell’s also 27 inch UltraSharp PC monitor but 4K is still 4K and at the price tag for this stylish Acer offering, you’re definitely getting an excellent deal on a unique looking PC monitor.
So far, information on the S277HK’s color gamut, brightness and contrast ratios isn’t forthcoming but at least the price and rough release date are known. This bad boy is going to be hitting the shelves around early to mid-December for a MSRP of $864 USD.
