LG’s awesome new 4K WCG HDR Monitor Going on Sale March 28th
Stephan Jukic – March 17, 2017
The LG 32UD99 has garnered plenty of attention and hype since its announcement at CES 2017, as we ourselves covered here recently. Now we finally know when it hits the shelves and at what price it’s going to be selling for.
The new cutting-edge display for PCs will be available as of March 28th for a not-so-cheap retail price of $999 according to online pre-order websites. For our part, we’re expecting this price to decrease a bit further shortly after the monitor’s release date and especially if the UD99 is bought from a site like Amazon.com.
As for its robust listing of specs, this wonderfully spacious 32 inch PC monitor is built with some very narrow bezels along its edges to give a particularly strong impression of broad display space. It also comes with USB-C connectivity, DisplayPort, dual HDMI 2.0a ports and also includes USB 3.0 sockets. As a gaming monitor, the UD99 is pretty well decked out too with AMD FreeSync frame rate synchronization/anti-tearing technology included in its build and while the UD99 doesn’t come with the extremely low 1ms response times of TN display panel monitors, it manages a perfectly respectable 5ms.
Obviously enough with a response time like that the UD99 is an IPS monitor, just like virtually all of LG’s LCD 4K HDR TVs being sold today (this company really loves IPS display panels!) so this means slight defects like slightly weaker black levels and contrast ratios in combination with the benefit of extremely wide viewing angles. What we also know about the UD99’s excellent display is that it delivers 95% DCI-P3 Wide Color Gamut coverage and a remarkably good peak brightness that tops out at 550 nits, with an average full display performance of roughly 350 its. Neither of these is too shabby at all. The 32UD99 is also an HDR10 capable monitor and wouldd probably be great for watching 4K HDR content from sources like Netflix if hooked up to the right sort of PC rig or laptop via HDMI.
There are also a pair of pretty robust built-in 5W stereo speakers on the 32UD99 for this display, which will be coming out in silver white and silvery black editions.
LG isn’t listing this monitor’s aspect ratio or refresh rate but we’re betting that it’s going to be a 60Hz display. 144Hz 4K monitors are still fairly rare, even when we talk about the newest models on the market for 2017. We do however hope to see 144Hz refresh in this 4K ultra HD display. That would really make it an awesome piece of 4K gaming hardware, especially in combination with a truly powerful 4K and HDR-capable GPU like NVIDIA’s GTX 1080 or even more powerful 2016 Titan X graphics card.
As for the USB-C port, it makes the 32UD99 great for fast charging of devices like laptops while you’re using the monitor and gives this display great usability with Apple notebooks.
We’ll update this story as any new tidbits come up before the release date itself.
