LG’s 65EG9600 OLED 4K model may just be the best UHD TV of 2015
Stephan Jukic – July 15, 2015
Of all the excellent, innovative as heck 4K TVs released in 2015, it seems there is a king of displays finally. This is the LG 65EG9600 Art Slim Curved OLED 4K TV and according to the 11th Annual Value Electronics TV Shootout, this is the single best 4K ultra HD model of 2015.
Of course, such rankings are more than a bit subjective and a lot of factors or criteria might make one lean more towards one TV or another but that the 65EG9600 is absolutely superb is very hard to dispute. Furthermore, the annual event which judged it the winner happens to be widely respected in the electronics industry for its rigorous selection process and gets plenty of press attention to boot.
In this case, a whole bunch of experts and other voters were asked to crawl over the contending top-shelf 4K TVs inch by inch to judge how well they perform across a number of key quality indicators like black levels, contrast, color accuracy, color vibrancy and motion resolution among other specs.
At the end of all this technical rating and measuring, the LG 65EG9600 emerged as the “King of TV” for 2015.
The model comes in both 55 and 65 inch versions and is by no means an affordable example of a 4K TV, as none of LG’s OLED models really are. However, this particular TV achieves the best overall balance of specs and even price (within OLED 4K limits) to take its winner position. OLED technology has a lot to do with this too since it creates the deepest possible black levels yet seen in a TV.
In contrast to regular LED TVs, which only block out the light of their constantly running LED arrays with shutters that never fully eliminate at least a tiny amount of light bleed, the OLED 4K line from LG is capable of shutting off specific OLED lights completely, thus creating what is essentially a perfect “infinite” level of blackness.
Other excellent features of the TV go beyond just the OLED array however. The model is first of all beautiful to look at with its curved design and extraordinarily slim screen. Furthermore, the internal content resolution upscaling engine is almost second to none in how well it renders ordinary HD and even SD content into something clearer and sharper. Other features include 3D support, Harman/Kardon sound, LG’s excellent, very well received webOS 2.0 smart TV platform and full connectivity for access to all the latest and best 4K ultra HD content. The 65EG9600 even got a “Netflix Recommended TV” seal of approval from Netflix itself.
In what is now the second consecutive year in which LG releases models for its now famous lines of OLED 4K TVs, the 65EG9600 does a particularly great job of beating out competing LED models from other brands in terms of most visual specs and hardware quality. In basic terms, OLED TVs deliver the best TV display quality available today.
