LG Sweetens to pot on its new 4K TVs with free Netflix

As of this last week, LG has been offering a neat little deal for new buyers of the company’s latest 4K ultra HD TVs, they’re handing off 6 months of free Netflix use for letting you break in your new TV.

Considering the general poverty of content available in native 4K UHD resolution, this actually seems like one great deal to begin with. What makes it even better is that LG’s TVs are particularly suited for viewing the latest programming from Netflix in its native ultra HD resolution. On the other hand, there is one obvious catch to the whole deal: if you’re the happy buyer of a brand new 4K TV from LG and being offered the free Netflix deal, you’d also better hope that your internet connection is up to the task.

4K streaming services like Netflix, Amazon.com and Ultraflix all rely on high-speed broadband connectivity of at least, at least, 20Mbps to deliver their goods to your nice and shiny new 4K TV. If your domestic connection can’t manage this kind of connectivity, 4K streaming from Netflix either just won’t work right (will become choppy and halted) or, if you’re connection is slow enough, the content in question won’t be available at all.

Of course, most of the programming on Netflix is purely Full HD. Thus, even if you can’t access the 4K selections like Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Daredevil (the movie and the most recent 4K addition to the Netflix library) or over a dozen other shows and movies, then your free 6 months of Netflix courtesy of LG do have another benefit. They’ll at least give you a great selection of HD programming that your LG HD TV can then enhance beautifully with its internal  upscaling engine, which is designed to take normal HD resolutions and make them look more like 4K resolution on the screen.

In addition to this option, you can also wait a few more months until Blu-ray’s 4K disc format emerges. These will definitely be viewable on your new LG UHD TV and internet connectivity won’t matter in that case.

The deal was started by LG on the 9th of April and will be running through to July 29th. It works by giving you a voucher which comes packaged into a new LG 4K TV. Upon unpacking the TV and setting it up, simply open up Netflix on your LG TV’s webOS Smart TV platform, enter the voucher code in Netflix website and boom, you’re good to go for the next 6 months of free streaming video.
