Kaleidescape Inc to offer 4K UHD movies from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in its new movie players
Stephan Jukic – October 19, 2015
“Premium” movie player manufacturer Kaleidescape has recently announced that it has entered into an agreement for licensing rights with Sony Picture Home Entertainment for the distribution of the studio giant’s selections of 4K ultra HD films to Kaleidescape’s new Strato Movie players, via download from the latter company’s digital movie store. Furthermore, the company (Kaleidescape) has also announced that customers who now buy their new movie players will have five Sony Pictures titles in 4K included with their purchase. The interesting extra here is that customers themselves can choose the movies they get for free from a list of all available Sony Pictures titles in 4K ultra HD.
Kaleidescape itself is a company that aims its services at the luxury video market and their Strato Movie Player is the centerpiece of the brand’s home entertainment offerings via their Encore product line. Furthermore, Kaleidescape also claims to offer some of the best video quality in 4K or HD on the market due to their technology for playing their movies at higher than normal bitrates for elevated levels of crispness, detail and clarity. This applies particularly to Kaleidescape’s 4K UHD titles.
Kaleidescape also claims that their Encore line of players has improved their customer user experience by offering said 4K titles in full impact 4K with high dynamic range and motion rendering at a smooth, fluid 60 frames per second.
The new Strato players are not streaming devices, to be clear. Instead, they play back movies that have been downloaded over time to the media player via HDMI transfer to a 4K UHD TV screen. This by itself does ensure a much higher level of quality than the 4K presented by most streaming services like Netflix or Amazon, or Ultraflix, which have to make certain sacrifices in terms of detail through the HEVC or other format compression that they apply to their content so it can be sent via the internet on connections of 20 or so Mbps. In the case of the Strato player, this download deliver structure allows for Kaleidescape to offer its 4K content as 10-bit video with playback rates of 50 to 100 Mbps with picture reproduction being as close as possible to the original levels of detail created in the production studio with 4K UHD videography.
Another benefit of the Strato players download-based 4K content delivery mechanism is the fact that users of the service and media player box do not need to have an ultra-high speed internet connection going to their home in order to enjoy Sony’s massive seletion of 4K UHD movies and shows.
The titles from Sony Pictures 4K Ultra HD selection of content will be available to the Kaleidescape Movie Sotre for customers in the U.S.A, Canada and the UK for retail prices of about $30 per movie purchase in the US and Canada and for £ 20 in the UK. The 4K UHD Strato players will start shipping out to buyers as of the first quarter of 2016.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s selection of 4K UHD movies and programming is currently still the largest library of studio 4K content in the world. Sony as a leader in the development of 4K technology has also spent years building up a library of natively produced and remastered 4K UHD content. Their 4K Titles can also be accessed via download from Sony’s own set-top box the 4K FMP X10 media player.
