The 2016 science fiction action movie The 5th Wave, based on a best-selling novel by author Rick Yancey and starring Chloe Grace is now coming to numerous media releases for the home thanks to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Most importantly for us, the movie will also be getting a 4K UHD release, as is becoming more and more common with many new release films from Hollywood and others.

What we do know about The 5th Wave is that it will be coming out on April 12th exclusively in Digital HD and for those of you waiting for a 4K UHD version, you can get your hands on that as of the 3d of May, when the movie emerges in 4K Blu-ray with HDR encoding, HD Blu-ray and DVD.

Sony has been planning to put out The 5th Wave for some weeks now and the movie is also part of the company’s general plan to start off something of a franchise in young adult-oriented films. In this case, the talented and lovely Chloë Grace Moretz takes the lead role in a movie whose initial box office release was somewhat ruined by a massive East Coast blizzard which spoiled the film’s opening weekend.

The result of this was a slight lack of public knowledge of the movie and a rather weak revenue total of no more than $34 million dollars to date, with the opening weekend box office sales topping out at no more than $10 million. However, as of recent weeks, international box office performance for The 5th Wave has pushed revenues up to over $105 million so far, meaning a possible sequel down the road.

The movie tells the story of a group of human survivors defending themselves from a new wave of annihilation by alien invaders, after the beings’ previous attacks have already left much of the world in ruins.

The movie’s 4K Blu-ray disc version will include high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos sound that’s compatible with Dolby TrueHD 7.1. So those of you who own a 4K TV with HDR capacity can really enjoy whatever visual richness this movie has to offer.

Other bonus features will include commentary from both the director, J Blakeson and Chloe Moretz as well as several small featurettes, consisting of the following:

“Inside The 5th Wave

“Sammy on the Set”

“The 5th Wave Survival Guide”

“Training Squad 53”

“Creating a New World”

This is only the latest in a series of movies from Sony Pictures to get the 4K ultra HD Blu-ray treatment and we can likely expect many other titles which have not yet been formally declared for 2016 to also hit store shelves and online retailer catalogues on sites like
