Guardians of The Galaxy 2 Coming in 4K Blu-ray With Dolby Vision from Disney?

Disney has been taking things cautiously when it comes to launching their Blu-Ray movies in 4k UHD. While the rest of the big production studios have already jumped into the 4k and HDR arena since early 2016, Disney was until now one of the only major distributors not to show interest in the format.

The most common explanation for Disney’s unwillingness to start selling their movies in 4K BD is that they are moving in tandem with the slow adoption of Dolby Vision or other HDR formats and 4K TVs themselves by the public.

But Disney’s reluctance to get moving on 4K Blu-ray movie releases might now be a thing of the past, with a formal UHD BD movie release just be a couple of months away. Rumors on numerous sites claim that Disney is ready to not only release its first 4K Blu-ray movie but also to give that movie the full premium HDR treatment by including Dolby Vision mastering into it, not just the more common but weaker HDR10 that’s nearly universal to 4K ultra HD Blu-ray discs. For owners of 4K TVs which support the Dolby Vision format, this could be a serious incentive to buy this and other Disney 4K Blu-ray titles down the road.

Dolby Vision for 4K UHD video

All signs point to one of its latest blockbusters: Guardians of The Galaxy, which would absolutely makes sense, since the Marvel movie is the highest grossing film of 2017 to date, and has received a lot of praise for its high level of visual quality as well as for its action scenes and SFX. Almost needless to say, all of these are features that make a movie have some particularly awesome potential as far as HDR inclusion is concerned.

The biggest hint for this has come from James Gunn, the director of the popular film, who has stated on his Twitter account that he has been pushing hard for Disney to get his film released in full 4K format, including complete Dolby Vision HDR.

He has also stated in an interview that “this is a movie that is totally dependent on the huge visual effects, on the colors, on the lights—and all of those things can be fully seen in Dolby Vision, which is exciting”

From this we can guess that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is almost surely the movie that will become Disney’s first piece of the upcoming avalanche of 4K titles with HDR/Dolby Vision that will replace standard 1080p Blu-rays in the next couple of years.

We don’t have this completely confirmed yet but the Guardians of the Galaxy DVD, Blu-ray and Digital HD release date is estimated for August 2017.
