Fox and DirecTV To Broadcast First-Ever 4K NASCAR Race Followed by NBA & MLB Games
Stephan Jukic – March 14, 2017
After telecasting two college basketball matches in full 4K ultra HD glory in February, the duo of Fox Sports and DirecTV are now revving themselves up for their first NASCAR Rally broadcast in the same resolution format. Best of all, unlike Fox’s 4K recording of Superbowl LI, the 4K NASCAR Event will be broadcast to consumer audiences through DirecTV’s on-demand video service.
DirecTV, which is owned by AT&T has made the announcement that it will be delivering the first NASCAR race to ever be filmed and broadcast in 4K on April 2. The live sportscast will be conducted in partnership Fox Sports in the production and filming department and the specific event will be the Monster Energy Cup, held at Martinsville Speedway in Ridgeway, Virginia. The televised race starts at 2pm Eastern Time and will be available to subscribers of DirecTV’s live 4K sportscast channel, 106.
Like we said, this isn’t the first ever live sportscast conducted in 4K resolution by DirecTV and Fox Sports. Earlier in February, the two subsidiaries of Fox Network Group and AT&T had teamed up to produce two college basketball games in ultra HD. These were the University of California at Stanford University live event and the Washington at UCLA match on March 1. Both were broadcast to DirecTV subscribers with access to the company’s 4K content service.
Fox and DirecTV are also planning on producing Major League Baseball regular-season/playoff games, NBA games and college football matches in 4K UHD.
The current and near-future lineup of scheduled live 4K sportscasts will be available to subscribers with a Genie HD DVR (model HR54 or later) with DirecTV 4K-Ready TV or 4K Genie Mini combo hooked together and a compatible (newer, HDCP 2.2, HEVC-capable) 4K ultra HD TV. The Genie set-top DVR also has to be installed by a DirecTV technician and as a bonus it gives subscribers who meet the above requirements access to two other 4K UHD channels with video-on-demand content and repeat ultra HD programming.
Here are the other soon-to-arrive sportscasts (and their dates) that DirecTV subscribers can look forward to in live 4k ultra HD sharpness:
