4K UHD content is becoming more numerous, and that’s a great thing for those of us who want to justify owning or buying a shiny new 4K TV, but one type of 4K content that possibly makes owning an UHD TV more awesome than any other is live feed video of major entertainment events. DirecTV’s recent announcement that it will be broadcasting 25 Major League baseball games live in full 4K resolution throughout the 2017 season is a perfect example of this.

The MLB events start off with the Chicago Cubs vs. the St. Louis Cardinals on April 4th and move forward from there throughout the year, with four more MLB games in April alone. This gives you an idea of how much live 4K sports-casting has evolved from 2016 for DirecTV alone. During all of last year, the satellite broadcast services provider put out only 4 MLB productions as live feeds in ultra HD resolution.

According to Dan York, chief content officer at AT&T Entertainment Group (which owns DirecTV),

“The DirecTV and MLB Network 4K team knocked it out of the park last year with extraordinary coverage. We’re bringing the 4K/UHD experience back for MLB fans this season, so they can enjoy the games almost as much as if they were there.”

MLB Network President Rob McGlarry also put in his own commentary on the Major League 4K developments of 2016 and 2017 by saying that,

“Last year’s 4K production with DirecTV put MLB Network at the forefront of implementing new technology. We’re excited to work together again to elevate our MLB Network Showcase telecasts for DirecTV customers throughout the 2017 regular season.”

In addition to these 25 or more Major League Baseball sports-casts, DirecTV will also be broadcasting a number of NBA matches in 2017 –starting with Oklahoma City at Orlando on March 29th followed by Oklahoma City at Minnesota on April 11th—  and at least a pair of NASCAR Rallies such as the April 2nd NASCAR Monster Energy Cup races at Martinsville Speedway and Kansas Speedway on May 13th.  DirecTV also has immediate plans for live 4K delivery of the Master’s golf Tournament at Augusta National’s Amen Corner between the 6th and 9th of April. This UHD broadcast event is a follow-up to the Masters, U.S. Open, PGA Championship, and Byron Nelson Classic tournaments of 2016 and the Pebble Beach Pro-Am event in February of 2017.

The 4K broadcast schedule for DirecTV’s Major League Baseball games in April is as follows:

  • April 4th – Cubs @ Cardinals
  • April, 12 – Dodgers @ Cubs
  • April, 21 – Nationals @ Mets
  • April, 27 – Yankees @ Red Sox
  • April, 28 – Cubs @ Red Sox

In other words, for those of you readers who are major fans of live MLB, NBA, NASCAR and Pro golf, there’s plenty of incredibly sharp action in full 4K resolution to keep you and your ultra HD TV busy for the next couple months alone.

Of course, getting access to all of these live 4K sports-casts throughout 2017 requires jumping through a few moderate subscription and technical hoops.

First, consumers have to meet the obvious requirement of owning a newer model 4K UHD TV (mid-2014 onwards for the most part). You can find our coverage of the best premium and mid-range 4K TVs for exactly this sort of thing here. Said TV must include HEVC and HDCP 2.2 (all newer 4K TVs do). Then to access the above DirecTV content itself along with other types of ultra HD programming from the services, 4K TV owners need to subscribe to a DirecTV “Choice” package or higher and own a DirecTV Genie HD DVR (model H454 or better) that has been installed by a DirecTV technician. Some ultra HD TVs might also have to be connected to an additional device called the DirecTV Genie Mini. All of the above sports-casts will be available on channel 106 from the company’s service.
