Costco is working together with PRN, a provider of in-store shopping engagement solutions for retail businesses, recently revealed that it would be deploying 4K ultra HD resolution display technology to all of its in-warehouse Costco TV Network TV display walls. Powered by PRN technology, the new 4K network is available in all 487 U.S Costco locations across every state where the price club store has a presence.

The Costco TV network is going to showcase content in both native 4K ultra HD resolution at 3840 x 2160 pixels and in the existing 1080p Full HD resolution so that consumers in Costco stores can compare the viewing experience differences between the two resolutions and choose the one they prefer more easily. Analysts are expecting accelerated 4K adoption as a result given the usually obvious visual benefits of the format over 1080p. This prediction mirrors numerous recent and not so recent predications that 4K TVs will occupy about half of all U.S households by the 2020’s.

4K UHD resolution not only delivers the obvious benefit of nearly 5 times the total pixel count of 1080p Full HD resolution, it also comes with additional display technologies which essentially aren’t found in virtually any consumer market HDTVs. These include high dynamic range for increased realism through expanded contrast and color ranges, and the addition of wider color gamut technologies of other kinds.

The end result, particularly in the newest 2015 and 2016 4K UHD TVs of all types is a display clarity and impact that leaves Full HD in the dust in terms of quality.

Thus, the move by Costco in the direction of offering a highly visible 4K UHD home entertainment display selection is a definite stone throw into the near future of consumer entertainment technology.

According to Kevin Carbone, CEO of PRN, “Upgrading the Costco TV Network with 4K capabilities delivers a comprehensive solution at brick and mortar retail.” He also added that “We’re excited to support Costco’s leadership in the Consumer Electronics category, enhance the strategic communication platform inside the warehouse and help Costco members make big purchase decisions. It’s a triple win that builds on our longstanding partnership with Costco”.

The Costco TV Network is positioned at the entrance of all Costco stores and offers consumers who enter a clear and highly visible selection of the latest TVs for assorted budgets. Now consumers can explore the space for a much better in-person look at what 4K ultra HD technology can offer in home entertainment.
