Chinese Brand Skyworth aiming to sell 200,000 or more OLED 4K TVs with HDR in 2016
Stephan Jukic – December 31, 2015
Skyworth, the Chinese manufacturer of what could be described as second-tier 4K UHD and HD TVs is aiming to sell roughly 200,000 of their new OLED 4K panels in 2016. The company stated this as part of their comments at a recent OLED forum in Shenzhen, China.
The majority of the TVs will offer a package of HDR support technology, 4K ultra HD display resolution at 3840 x 2160 pixels and will be equipped with OLED display panels from LG Display. In other words, their OLED screens will be physically more or less the same as those found in LG’s newest HDR-capable OLED models.
LG Display itself is doing this partly in an effort to increase their sales and cooperation with Chinese vendors of display electronics and as a smaller part of a larger plan that LG has to significantly drop prices for OLED 4K TVs in 2016, following a move to genuine mass production of the units for increased popular appeal and sales.
Industry sources have also made not of the fact that LG is expected to considerably expand their OLED TV lineup in the coming year, with heavy OLED TV advertising planned for the 2016 Super Bowl.
Currently, as 2015 comes to a close, LG has already sold roughly 450,000 to 500,000 OLED TV panels throughout the year. These aren’t sales of just the company’s famous OLED 4K UHD TVs but total sales of all OLED panels in all resolutions, either to consumers, retailers or other TV manufacturers. The expectation is that 2016 will bring in sales of more than 1 million panels with the company’s powerful and innovative organic light emitting diode display technology.
While impressive, 2015 OLED panel sales weren’t quite as robust as the 600,000 panels predicted by the company at the beginning of the year. Furthermore, the 1 million figure for expected 2016 sales is a lowball offshoot of original predictions for sales of 1.5 million OLED panels of all TV types for 2016.
In either case, consumers who want to get their hands on some truly high-end 4K TV display technology which is considered by many to be the best on the market for both HD and 4K UHD TVs should have something to look forward to:
Due to their intrinsic physical properties, OLED 4K TVs in particular offer a level of contrast, color realism and perfect lighting control which far surpass the quality currently possible with any type of LCD TV display. OLED panels can create perfect, total blacks and illuminate segments of the screen right down to the single pixel level, with all surrounding pixels letting off no light at all. The result of this is a genuinely spectacular level of picture quality and realism that no non-OLED TV has yet quite been the equal of.
Currently, OLED 4K TVs are still expensive even by the standards of premium 4K TV display technology but LG’s supposed plans for mass production of these panels, coupled with competition from Panasonic, which is now also releasing a new line of OLED 4K TVs, should finally lead to serious price drops for these television models in the next year. Home theater buffs rejoice!
