Now here is a 4K notebook that’s definitely built with a gamer-oriented design, both inside and outside. Sporting some killer high speed gaming specs and also coming with an external design that’s downright sleek and cool, the ROF Strix is a portable gaming powerhouse that makes up the latest in a list of 4K notebook offerings from ASUS.

The manufacturer has only just recently released the ROG Strix, which goes by the SKU GL502VT and already it’s garnering plenty of interest from tech watchers and consumers with an interest in serious notebook gaming (as serious as notebook gaming can get). Offering up so many performance specs that it’s downright impressive, the ROG Strix also comes with a rather hefty price tag that puts it well above the average even among 4K display notebooks on the current market.

Starting with the essentials, the Strix features an Intel Core i7 CPU, one of NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 970M GPUs, a M.2 NVMe PCIe x 4 SSD and of course, a 15.6 inch 4K ultra HD display with LED/LCD IPS panel technology.

The Strix is the newest ASUS addition to their Republic of Gamers family of gaming PC toys and its extremely bold, black and red-lined design definitely marks this notebook off as something more than a simple high-performance office laptop. As a ROG, the Strix also delivers heavily on the already recognized premium power performance, cutting-edge processing technology and speed of other similar devices, but also takes things up a notch to put it in what seems to be a more rarified level of robustness, at least based on what we’ve seen in other major gaming laptops.

On the other hand, the ROG Strix can also be used for more than just gaming. It is after all a light-weight, compact laptop with plenty of power and as such, it has plenty to offer to anyone at all who wants superior hardware, heavy duty graphics, smooth data processing and crystal clear ultra HD display. That is, as long as any professional workflow user doesn’t mind the distinctly flashy look of the ASUS ROG Strix.

Aside from heavy duty internal processing specs, this notebook is a serious piece of notebook hardware across the board. Its IPS display offers wide 178 degree viewing angles and some truly superb color performance with 98% AdobeRGB and 100% sRGB color space coverage. Then of course there is the massive pixel density and resulting razor sharpness which come with 3840 x 2160 pixels of resolution packed into a small 15.6 inch screen.

Gamers who get their hands on the Strix will also appreciate the laptop’s 1.6mm throw, scissor switch, keyboard for tactile and positive keystrokes and a cool looking red backlighting that’s also useful for dim lighting.

There is also a very decent ICEPOWER audio package built right into the Strix along with four system processing profiles that consist of Optimization, Game, Media Streaming and File Sharing.

Finally, while our experience with previous reviews of so-called 4K gaming laptops and high-performance gaming desktop GPUs tells us that this particular notebook still won’t quite cut the mustard on full-blown 4K gaming, we do at least suspect strong overall performance for most video graphics and high frame rate Full HD gaming needs.
