In a movie somewhat similar to what Dish Network is doing in North America, AsiaSat has confirmed the launch of their first ultra HD 4K TV channel, called 4K-SAT, at 122 degrees E, on AsiaSat 4, for the sake of starting a new era in AsiaSat’s satellite broadcasting services for the Asia Pacific region.

The new 4K UHD channel by AsiaSat will be available across more than 50 countries and regions within the satellite broadcaster’s immense footprint and includes a range of territory that extends from New Zealand in the South Pacific to as far west as Pakistan and part of the Middle East beyond it.

TV operators and home TV watchers within this giant footprint covered by the new 4K-SAT orbiting satellite and having an AsiaSat 4 C-band antenna along with an HEVC-capable set-top box for broadcast media will be able to gain access to content from AsiaSat in 4K UHD resolution from the company’s channel directly over the airwaves.

Additional content and feature 4K movies licensed from foreign studios will eventually be added to the new 4K-SAT satellite’s channel with a potential reach to hundreds of millions of consumers as they buy systems which allow them to receive 4K satellite transmissions into their homes.

According to Sabrina Cubbon, Vice President, Marketing and Global Accounts at AsiaSat, “We are delighted to be at the forefront of next generation broadcasting technology, bringing to Asian viewers true UHD content. We look forward to working closely with our content and technology partners to drive UHD audience penetration into Asia”.
