A 55 Inch Roku UHD TV For Just $398: 4K HDR TVs Don’t Get More Affordable

Here’s a 4K TV deal that’s so good you might want to go for it even if you already own a 4K HDR television you’re perfectly happy with. After all, an extra bedroom or studio TV with the beautiful sharpness of ultra HD resolution isn’t usually a bad idea if you can get it at a truly low price. Well in this case the low price definitely applies. The TCL TCL 55S405 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD Roku TV with Smart platform is selling for just $398 from Amazon and it really does have plenty of value to offer for this many dollars spent.

The 55S405 from TCL doesn’t come with a host of the fancier features that you’ll find in premium ultra HD televisions from Samsung, Sony, LG or even TCL itself (check out our review of the fantastic 2017 P-Series HDR 4K television with Dolby Vision from the company here, it also comes with Roku TV). In other words, the 55S405 lacks some serious HDR specs and multi-zone local dimming. However, what it does offer is plenty for one excellent basic home theater experience with 4K ultra HD resolution, 4K upscaling and all the fine sharpness that both provide to even non-4K content of most types. Right now, the surge in orders for this wonderfully priced model has actually grown enough thanks to this deal that shipping might take as long as a couple weeks but we’d say that the wait might just be worth it. This really is a great choice in terms of value per dollar spent if you’re looking for a very decent second television on a budget, or even a very budget-friendly starter model. After all, 55 inches of display space is plenty for smaller living rooms rooms, studios and dens.

Now, what we really have to mention here as the biggest part of the 2017 TCL 55S405 55-Inch model’s value is its Roku TV smart platform. We’ve covered this particular smart TV system in detail in previous reviews and repeat that it is simply excellent across the board. Not only is Roku TV extremely user-friendly and smooth, it also offers some of the best streaming media options we’ve ever seen in any smart platform to-date. Roku has packed its OS for all devices that have it with nearly 5000 different streaming entertainment apps (or “channels” as the company calls them) which together offer up a whopping 500,000 different entertainment selections, including movies, TV shows, documentaries and a whole ton of other stuff. This alone makes the 55S405 model completely worth its $398 price tag.

  • If that isn’t convincing however, here are some other completely modern essential specs that this model has built into it:
  • Dimensions (W x H x D): without stand: 49.1″ x 28.5″ x 3″, TV. with stand: 49.1″ x 30.8″ x 8.7″
  • The above-mentioned entertainment monster that is the Roku TV platform
  • 4K Ultra HD picture clarity with extremely high contrast, rich color, and at least a basic level of High Dynamic Range (HDR) for high general image quality.
  • Full content upscaling engine for enhancement of sharpness in no-4K video sources of all kinds.
  • Direct-lit LED backlight for great picture quality, high brightness levels and excellent shadows.
  • 60Hz refresh rate allows fast moving action scenes to be seen smoothly and with minimal motion blur.

I have this television and agree, it is a great value. It has a refresh rate of 120 hertz, not 60 as stated in the article.

Hey there Scott, we checked that detail carefully before posting because other news sites had also claimed a 120Hz refresh rate. We’re essentially certain that the TCL P55S405 model does really have a real, native 60Hz refresh rate. It also doesn’t offer any motion interpolation option, so there is no simulated 120Hz rate either. This is common to some TCL TVs in particular. Thanks for your feedback.
