A Review of the Acer S277HK wmidpp 27-inch 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) Widescreen Display
Joining Viewsonic’s VP2780-4K and VX2475Smhl - 4K ultra HD monitors in being one of the first in the world with HDMI 2.0 built into it, the Acer S277HK wmidpp is a powerful piece of technology that also includes excellent specs such as premium rear speaker technology with DTS sound a 16:9 aspect ratio and a host of other features that makes this piece of PC hardware ideal for gamers and useful for certain levels of professional user.
Furthermore, despite its polished specs and unique HDMI 2.0 connectivity, the ACER is one very attractively priced 4K monitor in comparison to many other models which don’t even feature some of the same technologies.
The S277HK is definitely one of the advance models for a new generation of HDMI 2.0-capable UHD PC screens that are only going to become more common in 2015.
The host of great features to be found in the S277HK start with its basic design. This is a very attractive PC monitor and its sleek silver finish, extremely thin bezel and stylish supporting stand work to take it a cut or two above the usual utilitarian design that many other 4K UHD PC displays offer at the same price. This is the kind of 4K monitor that actually decorates your office or work space in addition to being an excellent piece of display technology.
Visual aesthetics aside, the S277HK is also a robust piece of technology all around. Due to its HDMI 2.0 connectivity, it gives users a broader range of options for getting content between PC and screen at a smooth 60Hz instead of the choppy 30Hz refresh rate offered by HDMI 1.4 and this makes the PC screen potentially great for gaming uses as more GPUs for PCs also start to emerge with HDMI 2.0 ports of their own.
Additionally, the 16:9 aspect ratio, 27 inch screen and 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution combine together to make a superb overall display clarity that’s ideal for a number of visually intensive applications.
Finally, unlike many monitors that come at the S277HK’s price, this PC screen also offers some seriously awesome little speakers that offer DTS effects and a remarkable amount of sound quality for being simply built-in speakers.

The S277HK is an IPS display monitor and this is a definite cause for at least some concern. While IPS technology delivers on excellent color vibrancy, brigtness and off-angle viewing, it tends to lag a little in its refresh rate. Thus, despite the HDMI 2.0 connectivity and 60Hz content refresh, the screens own response time due to IPS could cause some minor problems for PC gamers in particular.
Furthermore, while the connectivity options on this particular monitor are just great, it does have an odd little problem: If you unplug and move between different input sources, the display seems to have trouble recognizing what’s plugged in during a given session and thus you have to manually toggle in the on-screen display through your various input connections to set the correct source input.
Likewise, the display can sometimes fail to recognize what sort of input is connected to it and has been known to show nothing but a blank screen. Disconnecting and reconnecting a cable seems to fix this problem.
We should also note that these above deficiencies might have already been corrected by Acer or only applied to one single tested model, so they need not be a vote against the S277HK as a whole.
Finally, the fact that the S277HK comes with no USB connections, cannot have its height adjusted and cannot be mounted to a wall also takes some points away from its overall quality. HDMI 2.0 is great but USB is a crucial feature in a PC monitor. And while aesthetic value is great, it’s not as important as adjustability and flexible mounting options.
Ultimately, this is an excellent piece of versatile and highly capable PC display technology that delivers not only on connectivity but also on some fantastic display quality. Great contrast and color reproduction make the S277HK something of a winner.

For starters, the S277HK is truly one of the more beautiful of the 4K UHD monitors on sale today. Its lovely matte silver finish is made up of a mixture of plastic casing and a stand/base that are both made of metal. Additionally, this same stand looks quite stylish with its slightly boxy off-center design and really serves to decorate a given work desk. On top these aspects, the monitor comes with an ultra-thin bezel that adds its own touch of style which is definitely lacking in many clunkier looking and expensive UHD displays.
Of course, visual appeal is far from the most important thing about a PC monitor or any piece of work technology and luckily the design of the S277HK isn’t its only highlight.
More than anything else on this monitor, its HDMI 2.0 connectivity represents its biggest asset and value proposition. Only Viewsonic makes 4K PC monitors that also include HDMI 2.0 but unlike Viewsonic, Acer isn’t charging over $800 for its 2.0-capable model. Thnaks to this particular connectivity feature, both gamers and video editing pros can use the S277HK with some of the latest GPUs from Nvidia and are also potentially future-proofing their entire PC for new developments in streaming 4K content viewing from a PC instead of simply a 4K TV.
Finally, the IPS display of the Acer S277HK allows for some truly superb off-angle viewing that stays sharp and colorful even if you’re staring at the screen from well off center. This also means that two or three of these monitors connected together would truly create one spectacular viewing experience, particularly thanks to the nearly bezel-free design, and of course assuming you have the money to spend on several of these bad boys.
In terms of visual specs, the Acer S277HK is a fine performer across the board. The monitor offers a wonderful 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution on a relatively compact 27 inch screen, meaning that total pixel density in terms of PPI (pixels per inch) is excellent.
Furthermore, the contrast ratio of 100 million to 1 and support for 1.07 billion colors combine to create a genuinely superb overall display quality in which colors are sharp, vibrant and rich while dark blacks and bright whites are both wonderfully represented. Basically, the S277HK performs almost as well as some 4K TVs in delivering display quality.
On the other hand, maximum resolution delivered by the S277HK’s screen can vary depending on what sort of machine you hook it up to. Users who’ve connected this monitor to older tablets and PCs often found that resolutions of only 3200 x 2000 or even only Full HD were possible.
Finally, the brightness of the S277HK’s screen is a very decent and comfortable 300 nits, meaning that even if used in a brightly lit office space, the PC delivers plenty of its own internal illumination. In essence, 300 nit is more than enough for any normal needs and on par with what you’d get with most high end laptops.
Acer has packed on the connectivity options with the S277HK while also going off the mark on one crucial feature. Thus, while the S277HK offers the ability to connect the display to a PC via HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.2, Mini Display Port and even DVI, the monitor lacks USB connectivity for some completely unfathomable reason! This isn’t a game killer but it definitely lowers the attraction of the monitor, even with its HDMI 2.0 connectivity.
Also, because the S277HK offers HDMI 2.0, it gives you a 4K resolution refresh rate of 60Hz. This means that the screen is excellent in terms of smooth rendering for video, casual gaming and graphics oriented productivity tasks.
On the other hand, the IPS display does result in a slightly slow 4ms response time that isn’t the best for really fast action videos or gaming at 4K resolution.
The Acer S277HK wmidpp misses out on some key features and design elements while coming with some outstanding professional specs in other areas. Thus, its current retail price of $598.00 on Amazon.com seems pretty fair on the whole.

As we already covered, the IPS display of the S277HK wmidpp results in a reduced response time of 4ms. While this isn’t as bad as IPS often delivers, it’s still a bit slow for high intensity gaming and video in 4K UHD resolution.
The lack of USB ports is another truly annoying little defect of the S277HK’s design and it almost makes the otherwise excellent HDMI, DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort and DVI connectivity options a bit less attractive as reasons for buying this particular monitor.
Finally, unlike most 4K UHD monitors on sale today, the S277HK is not VESA compatible and cannot be mounted to a wall or have its height adjusted. It does have tilt and pivot flexibility built into it but the lack of VESA and height adjustment does take something away from overall usability and quality.
